When you found out you were pregnant and went to your doctors, when (how many weeks) did you get your first ultrasound? I got mine at 7-9 weeks. I have a friend who went to her doctor yesterday and they said her first ultrasound will be at 20 weeks!!!!! I thought that was kinda strange ? but is that the norm? I think that?s strange considering they do the ultra screen at 13 weeks. Wouldn?t the doctor want to make sure there is a heartbeat, etc. before 20 weeks??? Maybe my doctor is different??? Thanks!
Re: Help - 1st Ultrasound Question
Every doctor's office is different. Some do one at 8-12 weeks, some wait until 20 weeks. They all vary.
I personally had mine at 8 weeks.
i had mine between 8-10 weeks, but I also have a friend who doesn't get one until 20 weeks.
The did listen for the heartbeat with the doppler at 8 weeks though. She ended up having a miscarriage though. So now she is considered high risk, and her doc now will do one at 8 weeks and 20 weeks.
Hey GRJA! We're due date buddies!!!
From reading on this board, I'd say one or two U/S probably isn't that uncommon and have heard several girls say that they weren't expecting their first until around 20 wks. It sounds like some insurance plans may only cover a certain number of U/S per pregnancy...
My experience has been a completely different from what's common in the US though: we have had 2 U/S already (one at 7 wk, one at 10 wk) and will have the NT scan at 13 wk. I feel pretty pampered getting to see the baby so often...but I think my experience is probably way outside the norm.
(And yes: were I a doc, I think I'd feel more confident about my tx decisions and advice with a visual of what's going on in there a little ealier than the halfway point, but I'm not an MD or qualified to make those kinds of decisions, so I'll leave that one to the experts!)
I had my first ultrasound at what they thought was 7 weeks 3 days. Turns out im about a week behind. I will get another one between 11-14 weeks for the NT test and then at 20 weeks for growth and hopefully find out what it is.
Now my sister gets a lot more because they have to look for cleft lip and my friend had one at 20 weeks and thats all. Everyone is different.
If you don't mind me asking, is your sister at high risk for cleft lip palate? (I guess it'd be your sister's baby...ahem: I really need to start getting more sleep!)
I'm at 20 weeks and just had my first u/s yesterday. My practice only does an u/s earlier if they suspect a problem, or can't find the heartbeat with the doppler.
Every doctor/practice is different. Nothing strange going on.
