Private room - that's all that they have there... after seeing the episode of The Office where she nurses the wrong baby while in the hospital, DH looked at me and went, "Thank goodness we'll have a private room!"
One other question - does your baby stay with you in the room or go to the nursery?
I did not deliver at St. Joe's but I think its pretty standard everywhere that they recommend babies stay in the room with the mom, although they can go to the nursery if the mom insists.
LO was in the room w/us the whole time, although the nurses did offer to take him to the nursery for an hour or two during the night if we needed to get some sleep.
One other question - does your baby stay with you in the room or go to the nursery?
I had both DSs at St. Joes and had a private room each time. As for the baby staying in the room, I had to specifically tell them that I wanted to have them in the room with me. Like PP, I would ask for baby to be sent to the nursery if I needed some sleep (which honestly, you don't get much of in the hostipal). If you go on the hostipal tour these are all questions that should be answered there, and if not I definately would ask.

Thank you We have our tour in May so I will be sure to ask about all this stuff then too! Did you have a good experience at St. Joe's?

the labor and delivery nurses were amazing but so were the other nurses too. i def would go there again. my lo had to stay an extra day and they had to put me in peds so it was pretty stressful. all in all wonderful experience
I have not given birth at St. Joe's but have attended a number of births there as a doula and I have to say that they have always impressed me with their woman-centered approach. While some things are standard (private room, baby rooming in with you, etc.) some will depend solely on your care provider (OB or midwife). Taking a class will help with the questions to ask and desiging a birth plan, but more importantly it can help you shape your thoughts on how you want your birth and hospital stay to go. Sometimes it reallys just comes down to knowing what you prefer and aksing for it.
