I'm actually asking for help on how to get started and was wondering if I could PM some of you and/or email. Everyone I know says I should start a Etsy site and make digital invites. Right now I make them for close family and friends only, but I have gotten a lot of compliments. I want to make sure I wouldn't be making a mistake and if I'm in over my head with this.
My idea would be to post invites and have the buyer print them themselves. If you could let me know what kind of training you have, classes I could take to get better/tutorials, do you make your own clipart? How did you learn this skill? I have many more questions.
I really hope my post isn't inappropriate. I just want information about getting started. I can delete the content of my post, if it's out of line.
Thanks for any help. ![]()
Re: If you make professional invitations...
I don't make them professionally, but when I was doing Emerson's ivites for her 1st birthday, I used photoshop. I think most people who make them use some form of photoshop, whether it be illustrator or regular photoshop. You can take classes on it or in graphic design.
GL & maybe someone with more knowledge can give you some tips but if not maybe look into some info on those programs! GL!
Thanks. I do use Photoshop and Illustrator to make them already. However I don't know how to make clipart myself and was wondering if I would run into a problem with that. The invites I've made so far, either haven't had any clipart, just photos of the child, etc. or a very popular character like Lightning McQueen and I usually just find the image on the internet and adapt it for my use.
I'm not quite sure how to make the images yourself other than using a the shape tools & creating the shapes yourself, I couldn't ever figure it out on my own!! I do know you can purchase shapes/graphics from etsy or other graphic designers. Then you can still create invites while you are learning to create them yourself.
If you are going to sell them you can't use any licensed characters such as Cars etc. That will get you into trouble fast. To make your own clip art you need to usually draw something in illustrator with the vector tools. I find this extremely time consuming and I am not really an artist, just a graphic designer (there is a difference for sure) so I don't find that a good use of my time.
The best place to find images and clip art that you can licnese is on stock vector or stock photography sites. Some charge per use, some charge a monthly fee for X # of downloads and sometimes you can find free stock vectors that will work. Make sure you do not buy Rights-Managed images as those are going to charge you per use. You can search by illustration or photo, I prefer finding illustrations to purchase and then you can pull them into illustrator or photoshop and change the colors, add or subtract elements or just use them as-is. Some of my favorite sites are shutterstock.com and istockphoto.com.
I really taught myself most of what I know. Check out Lynda.com for free tutorials on how to do specific things in any of the graphic design programs. They have some great tutorials that are just as good as anything you would pay for.
This is fine if you are doing it for friends, but do not sell anything with images that you do not own the rights to. It is illegal and a headache you don't need, believe me. Draw your artwork yourself or license it.
Also you can draw on paper and then scan and use the trace tools in Illustrator to copy your drawing. That is a quick and easy way to turn your artwork into a digital image.
Thanks for the websites to buy graphics and the tutorial sites. I will definitely check those out. As far as drawing on paper I've never been very good at drawing so that would probably not work out too good for me.
As far as the licensed characters, what do you do if you get someone who wants one of those types of invites? I've seen them for sale on Etsy, does that mean that those are illegal? Sorry for all of the questions, I truly have never dealt with copy writing etc.
