pinkeye?

I *think* J might have pinkeye. He has a lot of green goo coming out of his eyes and this morning his eyelashes were all crusty. His eyes aren't really pink, though - just kind of watery. He doesn't seem bothered, but it's grossing me out. I have a call in to the pedi.

Has your LO had pinkeye? What did you do? Are they allowed to go to daycare? (J is there now but we'll pull him out if necessary.)

Re: pinkeye?

  • Sorry, but if it's pinkeye, no daycare. :(

DS had pinkeye earlier this year and his symptoms sound like what you described.  Green goop, but no actual "pink" eye.  The ped said, since his eyes weren't pink, it was most likely viral and not bacterial but since it's better to be safe than sorry, it was treated as bacterial and he couldn't go to daycare for an additional 24 hours after starting antibiotics.

  • DD has had it twice and both times we got antibiotic from the doctor. DD didn't seem bothered by it much either but her eyes were puffy and she had lots of goop coming out. My understanding is that it's highly contagious so if he does have it, I would think the daycare would require him to be out for at least 24 hours.

  • put some baby (tear-free) shampoon in a jar with water and wipe the eyes w/ the mixture to get rid of the gook. DS had it, but the Dr wasn't 100% sure it was pink eye, he was also very congested so she thought it might be congestion coming out of his eyes. I do think it was pink eye b/c come at DD's daycare had it and my friend who wiped DS's eyes got it! Wash your  hands often!

  • I think that sounds like viral pinkeye. Our doctor told us that bacterial pinkeye (conjunctivitis) usual makes the eye more red or pink and extra goopy.

But both are gross and super contagious, so no daycare.

  • DS had the same thing last week, and so generously shared it.  The Pediatrician gave him the drops, and said if it's viral it'll go away on it's own anyway, but better safe than sorry.

And I think the pink eye drops should AUTOMATICALLY be sold in a 2-pack because someone else in the house is bound to get it!

are you still nursing? or do you have breastmilk in the freezer? if so, put a little in his eye, several times a day. nature's antibiotic. i used it when i got PE last fall. it was cleared up in a day and a half, no antibiotics.

Darn . . . I wish! We used up my meager stash when I weaned two months ago. Talked to the pedi, they called in drops for us and we're going to pull him out of daycare until Thursday.

This worked for us too, back when DS was still nursing.  Nobody believed me, but I read it somewhere, tried it and the goop was gone in no time!
