November 2011 Moms

intro and question for runners

Hi Ladies!  I am so excited to be joining the Novembers :)  MH and I just started seeing an RE in January, and we're thrilled to be here now.  My EDD is November 12th. I am looking forward to getting to know y'all!

I have a question for all the runners out there.  I have been running for years now and just completed my second marathon in December.  Since being pregnant, I have really struggled to run.  I can't seem to catch my breath and feel like I can only go a few minutes without needing to stop and walk.  I've been being very careful and not pushing myself at all.  I'm just wondering if this is how it's going to be from now on.  I assumed I'd be running throughout most of my pregnancy.  However, with how much stress it seems to be causing my body, I'm thinking until I see my doctor I will just stick with walking a yoga.  What has running been like for you?

Re: intro and question for runners

  • My RE had recommended that I stop running while going through treatment and once I got pregnant, so I haven't run in about two - three months now. That said, I'm a triathlete and can't stand not running! At my first OB appt today they said I can run if I want, and to not worry about the old adage of 140 bpm. That will help me not stress about it so I think I'll give it a shot. However, if I'm feeling too out of breath or like I'm pushing myself too hard, then I think I'll just go back to walking. I actually found that walking super fast outside, or on a treadmill with pitch at 10% ish, was a great workout!

  • I'm not a big runner, but I am (was) an avid exerciser. I think 1st tri is its own breed of animal. I get winded climbing the stairs of my own home and cannot even think about working out with my horrible morning sickness. I plan to pick it back up as soon as I feel better in the 2nd tri. I've heard a lot of people say 1st tri is all about exhaustion and then your energy comes back during the 2nd. Good luck.

  • I'm a marathoner too and did a 10K the day before we found out we were expecting.  Since then I've made a point to run/walk every day, but like you I find it extremely difficult.  What I've been doing is running until I feel like I'm pushing it too hard, walk until my heart rate comes down, and then run again...it's definitely frustrating that 3 miles wears me out when last year I was able to do 26....but I think the most important thing is getting out there and staying active.

Congrats and I'm glad to see there are other runners here!

  • My experience has been the first week or two after getting my BFP, I was SO WINDED while running, I just slowed WAY down and tried to keep it easy/conversation pace.

It has gotten better!! In the past two weeks I've actually felt GOOD on runs, not sure of my pace or HR (I leave the Garmin at home these days) but it's gotten better. Don't give up! I have good days and bad (yesterday was awesome ran 8mi at lunch and felt great!) but other days I just want to curl up and nap and I've allowed myself to do that!

My goal is to do 45-60 (min) a day of some sort of exercise. If I'm not feeling it, I allow myself to cut it short but at least I tried (and fresh air always feels good!)

I still get up and swim 3x/week in the mornings, that's allowed my lungs to work hard without pounding my body.

The other thing is, I've not gone longer than 1.5hrs of running since my BFP. I did 15mi the day before I got it and I was a little winded and hungry. Since then I've backed off (since I won't be racing this season) and just tried to be "healthy" instead of "fast" :) Hope this helps, I've seen improvments in my lungs in thepast couple of weeks.

Doesn't mean I don't get winded walking up a flight of stairs, though.Embarrassed

Good Luck, hope your'e able to keep running!! Congrats on your recent marathon, too!

  • Runner and triathlete; it's definitely hard right now, but agree with PP...the most important thing is staying active.  I did 35 minutes on the elliptical last night and thought I was going to DIE.  It's so frustrating, but oh well.  A healthy baby is more important right now.  I'll be a runner and triathlete again post human-growing :)

  • I did a 5k Sunday and while it was slower then my normal races, I felt pretty good. I do get winded very easily but I just slow down when it gets too much. I hear the 2nd tri it gets much easier!
