New Born sizing??

ok so my baby is estimated to be between 7-8 lbs.  I just looked at a tag for a NB size sleeper and it goes up to 8lbs.  For those of you who had 8 lb babies did your baby fit into NB or did they go into 3 months right away?  I have about 4 NB sleepers and was worried to buy more thinking that my baby would grow out of them too quickly but then I am thinking I dont have enough.  I've washed one sleeper that we plan to bring the baby home in but have the tags on the rest just in case.  We also have no NB size onsies, just 0-3 months.  Not sure what to do...I know I can always go out after the baby is here and probably will since we already have every single neutral onsie/outfit/sleeper made (ugh they need to have more of a selection for Team Greeners!) but I guess I just wanted to hear others experience.

 Thanks!

Re: New Born sizing??

  • My 7lb 13 oz baby was in NB for over a month and a half. 0-3's were so huge on her that she looked like we put her in a pillowcase.

I would suggest getting at least 8 NB sleepers to start, you can always ask family to purchase more based on what baby weighs. They do lose some weight once they are born and many don't reach birth weight for a week or two. I also EBF and she has been slow to gain weight, she's barely 13 lbs now at 4 months. You'll find that you will probably grow out of length before height.

  • I would keep a few NB clothes, but don't buy more unless you need them. My daughter was born in April, so we mostly had onsies, but she was estimated at 6 pounds, she was born at 7 pounds 15/16 ounces and she fit in newborn clothes for a few weeks. Now she got big fast and was in 0-3 months for a few weeks, totally skipped 3-6 months and wore 6-9 months by the time she was a little over 4 months. Also companies have different fits - Carter's run big I think, but other brands (Gerber) fit really small. Expect that she/he might only wear something once, or for a week or two, because sadly, that is what happens sometimes if your baby is bigger.

I EBF too, and my baby was 95% percentile or off the charts for weight for the first 12 months of her life, so you just never know what might happen with sizes

FWIW - DD #2 was born at 6 pounds 5 ounces (estimated at being over 8 pounds when born!) and she is now almost 11 pounds at 2 months - which I was told was only the 25 percentile.

  • I agree with photo_nut about keeping what you have for now. Ella was 7lbs 3oz at birth and did lose a bit...but what we had was enough. I guess you could pick up a few NB onsies...but, I am not sure if you really NEED to KWIM? I swear she was in 0-3 in no time...and she was (and still is) average for her height and weight.

Are you getting excited?? Baby will be here soon!!Big Smile

  • We squeezed Collin into some NB stuff cause that's all the NICU had. He was 8 lbs 12 oz and within days was in 0-3. I agree with the pp to wait and see. If you would feel better buying a few more NB things, I would leave tags on until after the baby is born. It's so hard to judge, but I know we had lots of NB things we never got to use.

  • Thanks guys! This was helpful.  I washed one NB sleeper to take to the hospital and have 3-4 more with the tags still on...just in case!  I dont have any NB gerber onsies so glad to know they run small.  The do look tiny!

I am getting very excited but still feel wonderful...I thought at this point I would be miserable...I am keeping my fingers crossed that the baby is here before or on saint patricks day!  I still cannot wrap my brain around the fact that we're going to have a baby in days!

  • Just to pipe up for the larger sized NBs... DS was born at 8 lbs, 10 oz, and had dropped to 7 lbs, 13 oz upon discharge from the hospital.  I EBF for the first three months and we had major issues w/weight gain (as in, he BARELY gained during that time).  So, even though he was a pretty big baby at birth, he ended up in NB sized stuff for a good 2 months.  He was baptized on his 2 month birthday and wore his first ever 0-3 month outfit that day.  We didn't buy any extra NB stuff, b/c we were team green, too, and so were dumped on w/boy outfits after his birth, but we had been gifted a good bit in the NB size, and he mostly wore onesies for his first two months, so that made sizing really easy.

And yeah, stay away from Gerber NB stuff... they run at least a full size small (as in, DS is in 9-12 month stuff across the board and his 12 month Gerber sleepers are way too small on him).  We had a whole pile of Gerber NB sized onesies that had been gifted to us that I never put on him b/c they were just WAY too tiny.

Good luck over these next few days!  Can't wait to see what your LO is! :)

Ditto this.  DS was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth, but lost weight and slow to gain, so he was 7lbs 13 oz for the first month of his life.  People kept talking about how fast their kids grew out of NB and 0-3, but my kid wore them forever.

DH went out and bought some more for us when DS was born.  Probably because I was a c/s, so he was in charge of laundry and was sick of doing 2 loads a day!  :P

  • Both of mine were 8 lb 2 oz @ birth.  DD lost a little weight and was probably in NB size stuff for 6-8 weeks. DS never lost any weight (I didn't have an IV while I was in labor w/ him and some of the weight loss may be water weight the baby gets from mom during labor) and was probably in NB size stuff for 2-3 weeks.

There is some overlap in the sizing, like some NB stuff fits until they are ~10 lbs.

The one thing I wouldn't buy is the baby Gap stuff that is 8 lbs and under, that stuff is really small.

  • Sophia was 7lbs something (bad mom, I know) at birth and fit into Carter's nb for at least a month. I thought premie stuff fit her best for a couple of weeks, but I really only had a couple of things.

  • My LO was 9.5 at birth!!  But quickly went down to about 8.5 and didn't get back up to 9.5 for another week - so the NB clothes were only good for 2-3 weeks.

Honestly since all you are doing is holding them and laying them down, I wouldn't invest too much in NB clothing!  Buy bigger cause they will get to that next size sooner than you think!  :)
