Why do I have such a fussy baby?

I feel like I never get any quiet time or happy time with him because he is either eating, sleeping, or fussing! I don't know what to do at this point! I know he has a gurgling tummy and we have tried gas drops and colic tablets and they don't seem to help. What else would you ladies suggest?

Re: Why do I have such a fussy baby?

  • Is he EBF or FF? I'd try helping the gas with either adjusting your diet, or trying different formula. That is if you think gas is the problem. Could have a little bit of reflux. If nothing helps I'd check with your pedi. DD wasn't pooping as much as she should and was gurgly and fussy so I changed her to a diff formula (just stopped bfing) and it helped quite a bit if not completely.

  • do you give the gas drops at every single feeding?  If not that is something you should do.  Read the label I think you can give them around10-12 times a day.  IF i dont give them at every feeding it doesn't help.  warm baths sometimes help, as well as doing bicycle legs and having him stretch out.  You could also try wearing him in a moby wrap...or I have a ergo...that makes them feel close to you and you feel connectedto them and it sometimes helps with fussy babies.  Those are a few of my suggestions.

Sorry I thought I included that he is EBF and as far as I've noticed his diapers haven't changed.

  • Mine has gotten increasingly fussy too. (5 1/2 wks here.) I held her most of today- either fussy, or tired, or sleeping, or hungry. If I put her down when she slept she'd wake right up. (Doesn't help that my almost 3yr old and 4yr old were up her butt waking her up all day.) I am so exhausted. Doesn't help that DH thinks I have it 'easy' just because I was on the couch most of the day. (Does he really think I'm going to walk around with a screaming baby in my arms all day? Really?)

She sounds exactly like my LO right now! I am glad to know there is someone else out there going through this! I haven't been able to put him down for a couple days now without him screaming to be picked back up. My DH seems to be thinking I have it easy too, which is frustrating because he was so good the first 3 weeks and this week it has gone downhill, but that's a whole different story!

  • dd has got the same fussiness and tummy issues. try the drops at every feeding. i also try star of anis water. my mom swears by it. you buy star of anis (it's a fruit that here in atlanta you can only buy in hispanic supermarkets). boil 1 1/2 stars in a cup of water.give it at bottle temp to lo.  i give dd 1 ml in a dropper between feedings. and 1/2 oz 30 minutes after the last feeding. the extra water can be stored in the fridge and the actual star fruit can be thrown away.

hope it helps if you give it a try.

  • Here's my 2 cents. I read they start fussing from 2-6 weeks (6 peaks) & then it should get better.  Good luck!  I feel like I spend my life trying to prevent him crying. Obviously time will heal it.  Also try Gripe Water.

This is what I'm holding on for.  We're approaching 5 weeks now, so I'm really hoping to see some improvement after 6 weeks.

I hope that's true because my LO is a little ball of fun right now as well.

  • My LO is getting increasingly fussy as well. It started last week when I noticed his stomach was HUGE. He is super gassy which adds to his fussiness. As of yesterday he started spitting up after every feeding too. It's miserable around here. My 2yo is starting to hate me but I'm optimistic that things will get better soon.
    fingers crossed.

  • I started giving the drops at every feeding today and it is amazing the change in my baby- our "Witching Hour" was limited to about 20 minutes of her being cranky!

  • Such a relief to know that I'm not the only one going through this! At almost 4 weeks, the last week or so has been so much more difficult.

I read in previous posts that some women are doing gas drops at every feeding, are you using Mylicon or something similar? I have some but only do it during extreme cases, but am very willing to do it at every feeding.  Do you do it before or after you feed? TIA!
