Freaking out about a medicine I took

I have hemorroids bad so the dr prescribed me hydrocortisone acetate suppositories and cream and I told her I was breastfeeding. I started it Saturday.  Stupid me just found a little peice of paper in the box and it says about birth defects and if you are bf, a decision should be made to either discontinuing bf or the drug.....so I quit the medicine...but I can't stop crying.

What if I hurt my little girl.  I took it this morning, is it out of my system.

Can someone please help me.  I'm going to call the peditrician in the morning..but I can't sleep.  I just hope I didn't hurt her :(

Re: Freaking out about a medicine I took

  • First, take a deep breathe!!

2 things...1st: Your Dr. knows you are BF, right? They know that the benefits far outweigh the medication and know that there is very little risk if they prescribed it. I went through a similar situation when delivering (not the same drug) and that's how my dr. explained it to me.

2nd: My ped's office gave me this website and here's what it said:

    https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~3zwjlU:1

    Summary of Use during Lactation:

Topical hydrocortisone has not been studied during breastfeeding. Since only extensive application of the most potent corticosteroids may cause systemic effects in the mother, it is unlikely that short-term application of topicalhydrocortisone would pose a risk to the breastfed infant by passage into breastmilk. However, it would be prudent to use the least potent drug on the smallest area of skin possible. It is particularly important to ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas of skin that have been treated.

It's a government website so pretty reliable...check it out. If you can't find it let me know and I'll try to type it again. I can't make clicky so I just copied and pasted the page for the hydrocortisone. Here's the main search site: https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search

Only water-miscible cream or gel products should be applied to the breast because ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking.[1] Any topical corticosteroid should be wiped off thoroughly prior to nursing if it is being applied to the breast or nipple area. Maternal use rectally with a cream or by suppository poses very little risk to the breastfed infant.

Now go get some sleep while your baby is sleeping Momma (don't you just love that line lol)!!

BTW - sorry I left out that last line, I'm glad other poster put it in there. I didn't read that far down...it was an important line!

    Good night!

  • Why wouldn't you research something on your own before taking it? Try being proactive with your health and the health of your children from now on. A doctor is only human and can make mistake, it is your job to double check everything they say.
