Labor worries

So i know almost every woman goes through it at least once but....this is my first pregnancy and i am the biggest chicken ever. I have nighmares almost every night about labor. Some poeple say its nothing, others just make my fears and anxiety about it worse. i know its going to hurt, but how bad? any ideas on how to calm some of my anxiety? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Labor worries

  • Just keep telling yourself that women do this every day and choose to do it again, sometimes multiple more times!

I agree, this works for me! The fact that we haven't gone extinct is reassuring Wink

  • are you going to birthing classes??? this is my first too and for some strange reason i'm not anxious at all about birth, i've told myself right from the start women do this everyday and some even go back to do it multiple times and even for other women sometimes..... if they can do it so can i!

  • I'm certainly not a fan of pain, but I look at it as (a) inevitable--the babies have to come out and (b) worthwhile--I'm going to have babies at the end of it!

Knowing that pain is part of the process and that the process results in something so wonderful helps me.

  • I would remind myself that the pain was not going to last forever, it was the only way the the baby was going to come out and when it was over we got to meet him/her and finally find out if we were having a boy or a girl!

That being said, I'm not exactly looking forward to doing it again but it didn't stop us!

  • Thank you everyone for your suggestions i guess i kinda knew what the answer was it was just reassuring knowing im not the only chicken out tehre  :)
  • the thing that is helping me is reminding myself that this is a TEMPORARY pain.  it will go away.  and in the end i get my baby.  Also, there are ways to control the pain.  so if it gets to hard to deal with, there are always options.

  • Honestly, I try to not think about it.

I just think about how excited I am to get it over with and see her! I know that it's productive pain.

and then I pray that my epidural works...  ;)

  • I can totally relate and I am very fearful and anxious about the whole thing. Sure, I'm worried about the pain but on top of that, I have never been in the hospital, had an IV or had stiches. So the whole thing scares the s**t out of me. BUT it's the only way this whole process works so I have no choice and know that in the end I will meet my little guy!

  • This may or may not help you, but I just made a post with links about what the pain feels like.  Both links come from women on the natural birth boards, but they are really helpful and descriptive--even if you plan on having an epi.

If I were you, I would just try not to stress about it.  Remind yourself that women do it everyday and most of them end up doing it at least one more time after that. So you know it can't be the worst thing in the world.

GL.  I hope those links were able to help.

  • Have you taken a childbirth class yet or read many books about childbirth? I think knowledge is power and once you have a better understanding of what your body will be doing and why, some of your anxiety may subside.

  • Our bodies were meant to labor and give birth. We were designed that way. I keep telling myself this and I know once it is over I will get to hold our son. You can do it!

  • I was scared too my first pregnancy, but I had such a quick and easy birth with my son, I didn't have time to be scared while I was giving birth...  It was over before I knew it.  I gave birth naturally and with no drugs.  But that was just me.  I guess I was lucky.
  • I second the recommendation for a childbirth class.  I was super nervous about labor before starting them and now that we're nearing the end of them I'm really excited and looking forward to it.  The classes have taught me ways to manage the pain and make things as easy as they can be.
