Hi Ladies, I usually talk about my first born son on here but I have a question about NG tube feeding that will impact my second born son tomorrow.
DS2 was diagnosed FTT at 6 months of age. We've been working steadily to get him to gain weight (VERY slow going) and tomorrow he is being admitted to the hospital for testing and observation. The GI has already told me that he will have a NG tube so that the GI can test whether DS2s current decline in eating is behavioral or whether it's something physical as in his stomach is having trouble.
I've never dealt with a NG tube before. LO is 10 months old and is crawling and starting to pull himself up. How the heck do I keep him from pulling at the NG tube? I know it's probably a silly question but what is this going to look like from a parenting perspective? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: NG tube question
Robbie had one for about 5w when he was about 9 months old. It was hard. He did pull it a lot more frequently than I wanted.
LOTS of tape, reapplied frequently was the best thing you can do. And any time you see his hands go his face, keep them busy.
Unfortunately sometimes it just happened anyway.
We ended up going to a Gtube relatively quickly because of all the face trauma with the tube. I hated, hated, hated having to have the surgery.. but truly, it was much easier on all of us once it was in.
My Blog
I used to call my son the mummy. TAPE!! Make sure they give you lots!! And, even when you think you have enough, take some more.
I kept my son in beanies and hats, with the NG tube coiled up under it so he couldn't grab it. When he couldn't stand to wear a hat, I'd put him in a single piece outfit (like a romper or overalls) and I'd stash the tube under his clothes so that he couldn't get to it.
Ditto everyone about the tape and tucking it into rompers and onesies. My DD had one from birth until about 14 months old so she didn't play with it much since she had it for awhile. Will you have to replace it yourself if it comes out? We had to put it in ourselves and hated it every time, but at least we didn't have to go to the hospital each time.
If it becomes a long-term thing and you need duoderm (that goes under the tube on the face to protect the skin) or tegaderm (that goes over the tube to hold it on the face) please let me know. I also have about 6 rolls of medical tape. I posted a little further down that we are getting rid of supplies and would be happy to ship them free to anyone who needs them. The bags are already spoken for, but the rest is up for grabs.
Good luck with this! My daughter is FTT due to severe reflux, I know how hard it is.
