Is this kind of memory normal?

Beginning of October I went with Charlie and Lexie to order a double stroller at BRU. My girlfriend and her son also went. The ordering process took longer than expected so my girlfriend was giving the boys a couple M&M's.

We went back to BRU today and Charlie kept asking my gf if she was going to give him more M&M's. (This is someone we see many times a week)

Is it normal for an almost 3 year old to remember something from 5 months before?

  • Betsy's memory amazes me.  I know she has remembered stuff from months before.  So I think it's totally normal.

I sometimes wonder what he sits around thinking about. Our snow melted the other day and Charlie looked outside and said- no more snow are we going to the zoo? I had said when the snow was gone we could go to the zoo... once again months ago!

The boy kid probably never gives his brain a second to relax and be numb!

  • My nieces are good like that, they remember things you tell them from what seems like forever ago, it's crazy. Although sometimes they use their powers for evil, like when they remember something you don't want them too. lol My middle niece will litterally beat you to death verbally by repeatedly asking to do something you only mentioned in passing. I once spent an afternoon listening to her ask her mom when they were going to get her hair cut beacue my SIL said they MIGHT do it IF they had time. She's also called DH and I on promises to hold her cousin "next time" when we don't see her for a couple months AND by telling us "I didn't get to hold her because (fill in exact reason we gave)".

  • Oh yes. Especially if it's something you don't want them to remember. Wink

  • Mine does that, too. Sometimes it takes me a long time to remember what he's referring to, and then I'm amazed by how long ago it was!

  • yup. Ava BLOWS me away sometimes.

We went to a library we don't usually go to, and over a year ago, when we did, we had to wait outside in the cold for a few minutes for it to open. The other day we returned, parked on the OTHER SIDE of the doors, and she says "do we have to wait for the locks? it's cooooolllld!"

  • I think so...about 2 months ago we went to a playgroup at "Gabi's house."  While attempting to carry the 2 kids inside, I slipped and fell, and poor DS ended up sitting in a snow bank (I actually just slid down so I was sitting on my butt - DD was in her bucket seat and I placed her down on the ground, so DS got the worst of it).  Last week, I told him we were going to Gabi's house (we have been there since and been fine) - and he said "Gaba's house - Mama - boom - snow."  I couldn't believe he remembered that!  Although, maybe he was traumatized by the fall Smile

  • Oh for sure. Rhayna pulls crap from almost a year ago out and I'm amazed she's got that sort of retention!
  • Ry remembers everything. Each time we drive by the doc office (almost daily) he says "I give blood, I don't like to give blood.  I get band aid, I get pick sticker.  Big bird"...I cannot remember the last time he had to do a blood draw there...months ago
  • I have noticed this with Reed now that he is talking more.  I remember being like that when I was really little...my best friend's mom told me that my memory wouldn't always be like that and I didn't believe her.  Look at me now...what was I saying??

  • DS has a crazy good memory.  It is the sweetest thing to me and I love it.  When we do new things, especially things we think he might enjoy, he invariably is really solemn.  He's not a go crazy and laugh kind of kid.  But later, days, weeeks, months later, he'll bust out the little tiny details of stuff we've done and I LOVE it.  We still talk about a visit we made to the Aquarium last MAY.  And details of a trip to the beach from last June.

I remember vividly details from my own childhood.  Things that must have occurred when I was his age.  It's my own daily reality check that this phase, this part?  He could remember it forever.  And what do I want that memory to be?
