Looking for book recs...

My sister is turning 46 soon and I'm looking for a great book for her. She said she'd like to read more but I'm not sure what she'd like. Maybe a great biography, inspirational/uplifting, travel journal...I don't know. She's a very busy OR nurse, with no kids and isn't into chick lit. Please share any ideas. Thanks!

  • I really enjoyed "The Kite Runner". I haven't read "Three Cups of Tea" yet, but it's on my list.

Three Cups of Tea is a cool book but I will say moves slow and is a bit of a dry read

I'd recommend Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.  A fun series is the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich -- mystery and the first is One For The Money.  I also like The Cat Who... series by Lillian Jackson Braun -- they are just fun mysteries and more character driven by this quirky town than anything.  Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke if she likes sci-fi -- really interesting book that I just made DH read and he loved it.  I can still remember the whole thing and I read it in 8th grade!

  • I love Fantasy novels and have been reading the Dresden novels by Jim Butcher, detective novel where the detective is a wizard.  I also like the Nightside novels by Simon Green.

  • The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett is an amazing book. When I got to the ending at page 1000 I was just disappointed that there weren't another thousand pages of this story.

  • If she's open to it, I would recommend Terry Pratchett.  "Wyrd Sisters" might be a good one to start.  There's a great character in the series, especially good for powerful, busy, nurturing women without kids.  The big advantage is he's a deceptively light read without being by any stretch "chick lit."

  • My reading list is all over the map. I just went through my elist, I would try Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda and The Last Lecture by Randy Paush.
  • I recently finished "Water For Elephants" by Sara Gruen and I loved it!  It was a fast read but not exactly light - the story was fascinating and entertaining and also a little emotional.  They are making a movie out of it which I think is coming out soon but I know it won't be as good as the book. Anyway, I'm recommending this book to everyone I know!

  • Loved Water for Elephants. Just finished The Bronze Horseman which was very good. Also liked Eat, Pray, Love (hated the movie though) The Russian Concubine and The Girl from Junchow were also very good.

    I read a lot....
