February 2011 Moms

If I get mastitis again, then I am quitting.

I had mastitis in my left breast a couple weeks ago. It was awful. I had the chills, body aches, and the ridiculously painful boob. Hated every minute of it. Took my antibiotics, finished about a week ago, things are back to normal. Well now my right breast is starting to feel a little sore - and I swear to God if it's mastitis again then I am going to quit BFing. I just can't handle everything that is coming along with it. I know I'm whining, but for me, breastfeeding has just caused a lot of problems. First I got the mastitis, then I got PUPPPS which the doctor told me probably wouldn't go away until I stopped breastfeeding (it has gotten better, but still there). I have stuck with it for almost 4 weeks but really wanted to BF for 6 months. Now I'm just not sure.

  • Just take it one day at a time and if at the end, you choose to switch to FF then please know that you tried your best and don't feel bad.  I would try a lot of home remedies though to see if you can beat out the infection.  Put baby to your right breast as frequently as DC will allow.  Massage as she's eating.  Take warm showers and massage while showering.  Apply warm compresses.  You may be able to beat it out before it becomes a full blown infection.  GL!

  • Definitely have the baby nurse on that side often to completely empty the ducts. I have gotten a little sore on one side a few times and thankfully it never developed into anything. I have heard mastitis is terrible:( I'm sorry you have had to experience mastitis and PUPPPS. Ugh!

  • I hear you girl, loud and clear.  I told my DH last night that if this mastitis that I currently have in the right side turns into an abcess, then I am quitting.  I've been on antibiotics since Weds afternoon and there are times where I am still really hard.  I can't ever get the hardness to completely drain, even if I shower first in warm/hot water, feed him, pump, do cold compresses between hot, whatever I do.  However, DH then freaked out and started stressing about how much formula costs and how we couldn't do that.  I really want to keep BF DS, but I know exactly where you are, it hurts so much and he gets so fussy now when I start to nurse him, once he finally latches, it's fine, but it is so stressful for me and him just getting him to start because I think it tastes different for him and he doesn't like it...It is also SO hard to try and take care of yourself when you feel that gross and are that sick when your number one priority is taking care of your child, and I personally feel inadequate sometimes now because I just don't have the energy to be as loving as I want to be right now.  I try my best, and it's getting better as the fever goes down, but I'm definitely not on my A game.  At least the chills/sweating went away today!

Formula isn't that bad as long as you do not go with name brands.

Target brand Up&Up is just as good as Enfamil or Similac (depends on the kind it is compared to) and it costs around $14 a can. Sometimes the generic cans are $10 cheaper then the name brand cans even.

Or I have heard that even the Walmart brand, Parents Choice, is great too. You can actually request a sample from the Parents Choice website.

Just thought I would throw that information out there.

Thank you :)  I think that the mastitis is almost healed, in the past day or so, it has been MUCH better.  Now we just need to work on his latch and getting rid of the nipple shield...!  But I will certainly keep that in mind to bring up to him if I get mastitis again or just get to the point where I need to stop.

  • Also- Ksyknelvr, did you ever figure out if it is mastitis again?  As mine has been getting better, I've been hoping yours was too!
