Baby Names

Would you let your child choose your next child's name?

Just wondering. Maybe just middle name? Seems like a lot of people I know had their irreversible nicknames determined by their older siblings. Perhaps their parents should have gone whole-hog for the given name. Sometimes I think I'd love to delegate this task to my creative child.

  • If my mom had done this, my little sister would be named Berrycake.

  • For some reason DS thinks the new baby's name is Cooper, it has really grown on me, so it just might be the name we choose .lol

  • I let my daughter, age 5, choose baby to be middle name. She chose Kendall. My husband and I  liked it so it is staying. But as a middle name.
  • I would consider if I liked what they chose!

  • If that was the case my little sister would be named Shy Violet after Rainbow Brite's friend.  lol.  I was SO MAD when I was 5 my Mom wouldn't consider naming her Violet.  That being said, Mom flipped what she was originally naming her Kathleen Bridget to Bridget Kathleen because I had a little girl named Katie in my preschool class who was mean to me and I cried when she asked me if she could name my sister Katie.  So if a sibling is old enough to have a *strong* reaction to a name I'd think the parents should at least take it into consideration.  Bridget ended up fitting my sister way better than Katie would've, FWIW.

My DD wants to name my LO her name, so there can be big girl Kathleen and baby Kathleen.  (and nope, don't call DD Katie, still not a fan of that NN).  Other contenders (the day they discussed S words in preschool) were Steak, Sofa, and Pocahontas.  We haven't run by the name we decided we liked this weekend by her yet.  If MH refers to the LO as Jessie I just hope DD1 doesn't think the baby will come out looking like the cowgirl from Toy Story 2/3.

My friend's SIL named her youngest DS Thomas, even though DS1 has an unhealthy obsession with Thomas the Train.  DS1 calls DS2 "choochoo" just like he does Thomas.  Weird to me.  But as long as he's not "choochoo" still in high school its probably not doing major harm.

  • My little brother would have been "baby brother" my DD isn't a big namer, we had to give her hampster a name because she was content with calling it hampster.
  • No way. My brother was 7 when my mother got pregnant again and he was obsessed with the show "Rugrats". He became completely obnoxious with calling her belly Tommy and refused to think it was going to be anything else. When he found our it was a girl, it was a meltdown of EPIC proportions. But, he later made peace with it by thinking Tommy was still in the running. He really was so upset when they named our sister Iris, and not Tommy. Another meltdown. Hey, my brother had issues!.

So...Nope. Kids hold on to stuff way too long, don't let you forget it and then don't understand why it can't go their way. I would let them name their first pet though, but that's as far as I'g go.

  • Each of my brothers referred to the next sibling down the line as "Fred Head" during my mom's pregnancies.
  • I agree with pp, IF I like the name I would consider it...if I had listened to my DD, my DS would be named Lemon Donkey.Big Smile

  • I don't even want to think of what my 3.5 year old sister would've named me had my parents let her choose and/or help.
BUT, from seeing some PP replies, it's kind of cute how it "accidentally" came about.

However, I fear what my FSD might suggest when SO and I are expecting, she'll probably be close to 10 by then, and she is an only child, soooo yeah, not gonna go there...haha

  • My little cousin chose her brother's middle name (Graham) while eating graham crackers.

Guess it's a good think she wasn't eating GoldFish that day....

  • Maybe if you couldn't decide between 2 names, it might be okay.

My friend's boyfriend has a brother named Christopher Robin.  Guess where that came from?  When her boyfriend was 3, he begged and cried to have that be his brother's name.

My oldest son (who is almost 4) said he would love to name the baby "Coo-ko-lake-a".  Yeah, I think DH & I will be naming this baby without help from our kids :)

    My sister would be Cinderella.
  • Lilah insists that the baby's name is "Baby Emma", even though we are 90% sure it's a boy (and Emma would not be a contender, anyway).  She has also suggested Cinderella, Rosie, and Rudolph.  She can stick to naming her stuffed animals for now.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

DS1 wanted to name DS2 Pie, after his favourite food (he was 2). My 3 y/o niece thought Sparkles would be a great girl's name. My SIL at 6 wanted to name her cousin Chlorine.

So.... no. We do call DS2 (Caleb) "Tay-bub" as a nn because that's how DS1 pronounced it at first, though.

    That made me LOL

  • A friend of mine is named Kimmy after Kimmy Gibbler from Full House. Her sister picked the name because she thought having a new sister would be as annoying as Kimmy Gibbler.

  • We didn't really "let" DD1 name DD2.  But we kept trying out a bunch of different names that we liked, and Hadley is the one that stuck.  She kept referring to baby sister as Hadley, so we felt like we couldn't change it on her or she'd be very confused.  And obviously, we liked the name too.
  • If my mom had allowed this, my little brother would've been named Flounder. But, that was during my "OMG Little Mermaid yay!" period of life.

  • We had narrowed DD's name to three choices (C names for my mom): Charlotte, Caroline and Clara.  As soon as we told DS, he decided on Charlotte and called her that everyday.  Even though we didn't come to a final decision until she was born, I think we were influenced by how insistent DS was!

This is my son!  He looks at us like we are crazy when we ask the names of his stuffed animals.  Like he's thinking, 'the bear's name is bear, dummy'.  He wants another baby now (he's going to have to wait on that!) and when asked what we'd name that baby he says his current brother's name.

My friend briefly considered Arthur for her last baby, as recommended by her 4 yr old, who loves that show.

  • I helped give my little sister her first MN. Poor thing got saddled with Ethel. When I was 5 I loved "I Love Lucy", Ethel was my father's nanny as a child and he liked the name. Poor kid. Her full name is Brittany Ethel Nicole, product of the 80's for sure.

  • If I'd let DD name this baby, he'd be Caillou Rapunzel S.  Maybe if she was older I'd let her have more input! :)

  • Most likely not. If we were between two names, we might throw them out there and see if she took to one more than the other.

My SIL did this and my nephew Luke chose his little brother's name - Jack.

  • No. But my cousin allowed his son (aged 3) to choose their daughter's second middle name. Her name is Acacia Christine Tinkerbell Lastname. Guess which name the 3-year old chose? ;)
  • No, I wouldn't want to feel compelled to use their choice.

I do know someone who do this with her childdren.  They were big into Barbies at the time so their sister was named Kelly after "Baby Sister Kelly."

  • My son suggested the name Chester because he loves to play Chess. I don't know ... it's kind of growing on me!  LOL  Maybe for a middle name.  ;)

  • I would not let my child (if I had one) choose the name of my next child.

If my mom had let me name my youngest sister, her name would have been Unicorn Rainbow Flower.

I would listen to my child's suggestions, but final decision would go to me and DH.

  • I think it would depend on the name.  I had a coworker whose oldest daughter(3 or 4 at the time) suggested "Rosie" for her baby sister--the parents liked it enough that they named her Rosemary or Rosalie(I can't remember which), and called her Rosie for short.  When they found out a few months later they were expecting again, they decided that since big sister did such a good job naming Rosie, she could try naming this one, too.  She announced that her soon-to-be baby brother's name was "Fork."  Coworkers got a good laugh, and made suggestions of using it as a MN and/or spelling it "Forque" so it would look/sound "more like a name"...in the end, though, baby Fork was named Nathaniel.  Another coworker said she'd known a little girl who wanted to name her twin siblings "Ketchup" and "Mustard."
