What do you do? RE: milk (clicky poll)

DD needs milk, says the doc, not just water.

But, I'm paranoid that she'll drip/spill with her sippy cup on the carpet since no sippy cup I've found (I've tried about 9) to be completely spill proof. And I never know how long is too long for milk to be out of the fridge. Do I give her a sippy of it for an hour, then take it away or get a fresh cup or??? For the record, by giving her a sippy cup of milk throughout the day, she'll drink about 10-16 oz/day ish (or rather, that's how much water she was drinking per day with a sippy cup throughout the day).

But if I restrict her milk intake to meal times at the high chair, she'll only drink about 2-3 oz/day.

Thoughts? What do you do?

I give her small amounts of milk in her sippy that I know she will finish before it gets warm.  When it's empty I will give her some more.

This.  I usually just put probably the equivalent of 3 oz in her sippy cup and when she's done, if she wants more, she comes over and says "More" and then I give her a few more oz's.

  • If I do milk at mealtimes, my daughter doesn't eat as much, so she gets sippys of milk about 3X per day for a half an hour or so. I would let her have it for an hour, but she usually finishes what I give her before then.

  • I fill up his sippy first thing in the morning and its usually empty by 9-10am, then I fill it again and put it back in the fridge during naptime, which is between 11-2-it varies. After lunch I fill it again and put it back in the fridge until he asks for it, which he does often. I do the same after dinner and its all gone by bedtime. He drinks ALOT of milk. We do soy, if that matters.

  • i give ds a sippy many times a day. he only drinks milk unless we've run out of it and are at a resturant, then he'll drink some water.

but it does drip on the carpet so i usually shampoo every couple weeks to get rid of the black spots the milk drops leave behind.

i only let him have his milk for about 10 minutes and then i take it away.  he usually looses interest in under 5 min anyway.  either way, he drinks between 20-30 oz of milk a day.

  • I don't understand why your pedi says your LO NEEDS milk. Cheese, yogurt, kefir and other dairy products can easily meet a child's daily calcium needs. I prefer that DD gets her calories from actual food than from beverages.

unless you're giving your LO vitamin D supplements they do need whole/vit d milk, and they need 16-20 oz a day.

I usually fill the sippy and then refrigerate it if he isn't drinking it after about 30-40 minutes. I do this throughout the day and refill it as needed.

  • DD gets water throughout the day.  She gets milk in her sippy before her nap and before bedtime.

  • DS only gets milk at meals for the most party but he still takes in a good 16-20 oz a day plus all his dairy products.  Did ped say you need to give more than you currently are...what are you currently doing?

that being said, we have insulated sippys that keep it pretty cold for a long time, its nice if we are goin to dinner and I can fill it with whole milk at home and bring it out with us...they are NUBY insulated cups.  I wouldn't worry about the carpet too much but thats me....I have children now, my house will never look "unlived" in..

    good luck!!

  • I don't like the idea of anything other than water being offered away from the table.  I also have the same problem as you - DD will only drink a couple of oz. of milk at mealtime.  One time when she was sick I gave her warmed milk with a dash of cinnamon and honey and she sucked it down like there was no tomorrow!  Ever since then, I've been doing 6-8 oz. of warmed milk (I cut out the honey and sometimes do a little cinnamon still) in the sippy cup before nap and bed.  That way, I know she's at least getting 12 oz. per day - which I'm totally happy with.  It's now part of her bedtime ritual.  I also still offer cold milk at lunch and dinner.

Don't worry too much about amounts either - try to supplement with other dairy products and other calcium- and Vitamin-D - rich foods.

  • Both of my girls get milk whenever they want it. I give a very small amount at a time and dump it after an hour or so if they haven't finished it, but it's rare that I have to dump any. They both get milk in open cups at the table so they don't wander the house with it, but are welcome to it any time they want. DD2 goes through about a gallon a week, which comes out to somewhere around 20 oz a day.

  • We always give milk at mealtimes.  When meals are over, milk is done.  However, our youngest really doesn't like milk and refuses to drink it.  Our doc said as long as she eats well otherwise (and she does) that it wasn't a big deal.

  • I do milk (formula actually due to dietary needs) in the morning and evenings, not associated with a meal, she usually does 6-8 ounces at each time. I do not offer milk during the day because I have to mix it 6 or 9 ounce batches and she just won't drink that much at a time during the day so I end up wasting the prescription formula. Daycare offers the formula at meal times but they usually can't get her to take it.

Spills on the carpet though I handle with a quick soak up on a towel then if it's anything other than water I use some baking soda over the damp spot to draw the liquid/dampness out of the carpet. I've never used it specifically on milk but I have on LO's formula successfully. And trust me I would much rather have spilt milk going sour in the carpet than this formula going sour.

If all cups have some leakage to them and I have to offer some milk during the day, I would choose one of the insulated cups to help keep the milk longer.

  • I give her a big sippy of milk with breakfast and one right before bathtime at night.  Otherwise, she gets water in a sippy all day long.

A lot of dairy products are fortified with Vitamin D. Read the ingredients on yobaby yogurts sometime, for example.

  • L doesn't drink enough milk either, we are working on this.

Our pedi said that other dairy products are not sufficient because most are not made with homo milk, which has fatty acids required for brain development. He said a minimum of 16 oz a day.

  • I usually give DS his milk several times a day, but don't leave it out.  For example, he gets it after we get up and get dressed, and carries it around while I get breakfast ready.  After breakfast it goes back to the fridge.  He gets it with a story before morning nap, and then again when he gets up from nap with a snack (usually in my lap).  Then it goes back to the fridge...and on and on like that through the day.  Like your LO, he only drinks a little at a time.

Also, have you tried these tommee tippiee insulated cups?  I love them and they only leak when they are left on their side for a long period of time.  You also don't have to worry as much when it's been out of the fridge for a while.

  • It's not great for LOs teeth to sip milk or juice throughout the day. DS gets his milk at specific times, but we usually put him back in his chair so he drinks it rather than tossing it around on the rug. Maybe she's not hungry enough when you're offering it? You can also give yogurt, cheese and other dairy so she doesn't have to drink as much straight milk if it's a fight.

We do soy milk but only about 5-6 oz a day we go outside and play to get vitamin D but on a farm you are outside a lot more them most people so we don't need the D from the milk.  I put 3 oz in a sippy and let him have it sometimes it's out 6 hours but the soy milk seems ot be ok regular milk I would keep out more then 90 min

Apparently, Miles is just going to have issues, then, since he is allergic to milk.  Because, you know, there aren't fatty acids in any other food at all.  Just milk. [/sarcasm]

  • My daughter won't drink milk. She has cheese or yogurt with every meal (both made with whole milk) and she breastfeeds 4-6 times a day (probably 10-12 oz).

Milk is just a convenient way to make sure your child is getting certain nutrients- not the ONLY way.
