Baby Names

Question about nickname on birth announcement?

Silly random thoughts on this Monday morning.....

We are team green but if this is a boy he'll be named John Adam LastName, III. (DS was not named that b/c he was named after DH's best friend who is deceased)

We will call him either Jay or Trip most likely....still trying to figure that out.

We did a pretty formal birth announcement with DS - cardstock with mounted photo, no cutesy sayings or anything, just baby's name/stats and our names below. We'll be doing something in the same vein for this baby.

So would you just put it on there his full name or would you somehow include nickname in quotes somewhere?  Like John Adam LastName, III  "Trip"

If it was a more casual card we could put something like "Jay is here!" or "Welcome Trip!" at the top, but that's definitely not the style of the cards.

I am thinking just put the formal name on there without NN b/c everyone who gets one will know, sooner or later, what we are calling him.

Thoughts?

This is what I was thinking.  I think most people have some idea of what nn they are planning on using for their child but I have rarely seen them on the birth announcements.

    Big Boy N - 2009
    Little Man Z - 2011
    Baby Girl E - 2013

  • IMO nn evolve as the child grows his or her personality. Why set yourself up to have a nn for a child that may be more a Jay then a Trip or something you may not even have thought of yet... Keep the name off.

  • How does John Adam become Jay?   That's a completely different name on its own.

As for your original question.. don't use the nickname on the announcement.

  • Jay would maybe just be a reference to his first initial, "J".  And Trip comes from being the third, I get that.  I would leave it off, too, just because I know so many people who have said, we're naming her Alyssa and calling her Aly, or we're naming him John and calling him Jack- and they never did!
  • I think it depends on how set on the nickname you are...it doesn't sound like you are sure. In our case, we named our son John Phillip LastName, but he was definitely going to go by Jack. So we put the whole name, then "Jack" as well.

  • I have to say we did not have "cutsey" announcements and put our DS's nickname on the annoucement.  We knew, without a doubt, that we would be calling him Quinn instead of the name my DH loved Quinton that is his "actual" on paper first name.  I wanted everyone to know that we were calling him Quinn and wanted them too as well.  I guess if you're going to the hospital knowing that you're bringing home Jay or Tripp, there is a place on the annoucement for that name, if you're unsure, the leave it off.  I did Quinn's announcement like this: (with his terribly long awkward handle - I know that - DH got his way all around! both our dad's fn are Quinn's mn)

    Quinton Raymond David

           "Quinn"

    Good luck!

Jay is a name itself, but it's also an accepted nickname for John, James and Jason.

And Trip is obviously for Triple - since he'd be the III.

    Thanks everybody for your input!

  • I would leave it off. My step-sister put Alexander "Lex" Lastname on my nephew's announcements. Yeah, Lex just didn't stick. It didn't suit him. He is now 7 and goes exclusively by Zander.
