Jumping the gun obviously...

but is anyone here planning on homeschooling?  I haven't started my research on this yet, but we're pretty sure that we will be  And the thought of it kind of excites me because I can also incorporate into DS learning some of the things that they no longer or barely teach in schools anymore (art/music appreciation, home ec, etc) in addition to all the regular stuff he'll learn.  Ok, I'm a geek!  Big Smile

I should also add that we may be living in some areas with very poor school districts.  So, our options for what we want for DS would be boarding school, military school or homeschooling to get the kind of education we want him to have.  But, the idea of homeschooling really makes me kind of giddy.

Re: Jumping the gun obviously...

  • I like the idea but I do not have the temperment to teach small children.  It is my own shortcoming but I won't visit that upon the next generation.

I have already researched the best schools in our area and am planning accordingly.

  • wow..what schools don't do art/music anymore?
  • If you're a geek, then what am I?  T's only 5 months old, but I was perusing k12.com the other day.  Geeked  I think Lady G said that she uses this program for her son.  It looks really cool, and I'm very excited about the possibility of homeschooling.
  • I could never do it. ?Well I won't say never. ?I am contemplating private/catholic school, which I said I never would do since I didn't appreciate it when my parents switched me. ?But that was mainly because?they?did it later (middle school) and cliques had long since formed.

  • I am a teacher, and am contemplating it.  I don't know if I will actually do it though because the schools here are pretty good.  I just think it would be fun and I know there are lots of ways to get your kids socially involved even if you do home school.  It's definitely a possibility.
  • Sadly, a couple of the many elementary schools I attended only have one day a week where they have art or music classes anymore.  And it keeps getting talked about to take it out of the school because there's never enough money in the budget for them.  Kind of a sad thought IMO.
  • We have no kiddos, but we've talked about DH

homeschooling any future children.  We just haven't

    made any decisions yet :)

The schools here aren't technically phasing out art and

music, but art and music teachers are being asked/

strongly suggested to use their class time to teach

math or other skills that kids need to pass the grade

level tests, instead of art or music.   It truly sucks.

  • I am the one that does k12 with my son. We love how how if he is into a class we can do more of that one day and more of another a different day. I am not brave enough to completely homeschool, but the regular schools where we moved to last year are not what we want for ds. After trying to move him to another school I happened apon this school and have loved it most days since.

There are activities/field trips through the school which have been quite fun. Safari west has been a place I have wanted to go for years now, but it is expensive. One day I was looking at the listing of outtings and found that place. To be honest I am glad we didnt pay full price, fun, not fun enough for that price though.  Tomorrow we are heading to the winchester mystery house (paying group price) with a different teacher. Its wonderful not to be limited to field trips only done by certain grade or teacher. Last week we did whole foods, that was a yummy one. :)

If you have any questions just ask.

Sadly - many. Even ten years ago when I was graduating high school our art program had been slashed to almost nothing (particularly sad for me since I ended up attending an art college) due to cuts in the budget. I was in a great school system - I shudder to imagine the state of many less than stellar school programs. Often when funds come up short as they so often do these days, those are the first classes to go.

  • I'd like to. hopefully when the time comes I can have the discipline to do it.
  • To be honest I never saw myself as a homeschool parent. I tutored and such in college and when younger, but this is different.
  • I plan to. I don't like public education in America, and we're planning to live in Europe for a good chunk of LPG's childhood anyway, so it'll just be easier for me to teach him/her than have to deal with foreign schools. I plan for us to do outside activities for social skills, and maybe have him/her switch to regular school in high school if that seems to be a good idea.?

    But ... who knows what'll happen. ?

  • My husband is a public school teacher, but if we are in a situation where we both feel that homeschooling would be best then we would not hesitate to do it.  I feel strongly that real education begins and ends at home anyway, so this would not be a huge stretch.  Hopefully we will be able to send our kids to public school, but you never know.
