Preemies

Am I being overly sensitive?

*vent* I called to check on Scarlette this morning and asked about her girth. They still measure this every 4 hours b/c of her distention issues. They are slowly introducing the bottle to her so it's even more important to watch as she distends with stomach feeds vs the NJ feeds.

The nurse said she didn't check it and when I asked why she answered "there is no reason to be checking the girth of a baby this old, the chances of NEC are really slim, I don't know why you are concerned about it"

So I explained the above and that I wanted her measured. But I was thinking "if you read her chart, you'd know it's protocol for MY baby to still be checked every 4 hours" - it's not that I request it, it's the doctor's orders!

And she kept saying "Well, I know how mommies worry so if it's something mommy wants me to check, I'll do it to ease your mind" and I am annoyed because I don't want to be patronized, I want it done because it is what is supposed to be done.

This is our second time w/this nurse and last time she had her I kept telling her that the baby's stomach was measuring too large and she kept telling me that all nurses measured differently. :/ Finally the NP came in, said her belly was too big and had to start her on suction. I was pissed b/c they could have started that hours earlier and not left my baby in pain if this nurse would have just listened to me. So for her to keep telling me today that she'll do mandated care for my child just to placate me is kind of rubbing me the wrong way.

I requested not to have her again a few months ago after the first issue and so I am surprised she's on our service and am unsure if I should say something again or not now :/

  • My vote would be that you should share your concerns, again, and to request that this person not care for your baby in the future.  NICU mamas have enough to worry about, let alone deal with nurses who are patronizing and in error simultaneously.  I am also the mama of a NEC survivor, so this is near to my heart.

  • Not overly sensitive at all.  She does sound very patronizing.  I would be pissed about the way she talked to you and that she wasn't doing what she was supposed to.  I would definitely talk to someone again about having her take care of your LO.

  • Speak to the charge nurse and request that you don't have this nurse again.
  • A little late but I am with the PPs. There is no way I would tolerate this.

I agree with this too. Hugs!
