My DS will 7 months tomorrow. He has been on solids for the past 2.5 months (per his doc). He has also been receiving breast milk and formula. He's a GREAT eater - not picky at all. I was sick for a month and had to start supplementing with formula because my milk dropped and he was thirsty and super agitated at the breast. I'm well now and have been pumping at work as usual (since he was 6 weeks old) but my milk has dropped again and as of last week DS is no longer interested in nursing. last week I started to only get half an ounce total each time a pumped. Over the weekend I started pumping for 15 minutes every 3 hours around the clock, am doing one power-pump session each night, am taking fenugreek, upped my water, am drinking mother's milk tea and eating oatmeal for breakfast but still I'm only getting half an ounce, if anything, when I pump. Please help. I want to feed my son for another 5 months and it's breaking my heart... =(
I have a Medela PISA and used to get at least 12-15 ounces over 3 pump sessions at work when my son was nursing regularly.
any advice would be great! TIA
Re: XP: desperate... (post from breastfeeding)
check out kellymom.com first of all. then look up to see if you have a local la leche league rep that you can call for advice.
I'm no expert but have gone through times with DS where he seems like he's not interested anymore. He only gets bottles two days a week at day care though. But, I've just pushed on, offered it to him and if he declines, just go on with our day. He would latch on a eat when he was hungry. I don't worry about him starving because he eats plenty of solids and I make my own food so he's not just being filled up, he's getting nutrients. After each period of struggles, he's come around and been interested again. It could be teething that's effecting his interest.
But, you do need to speak with someone who is more knowledgable, I know my LLL rep is amazing, hopefully there is someone near you.
good luck!
This is a long shot, but have you noticed any reduced pumping power from your pump. There was a recall on the PISA. https://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/media-center/126/notice-of-product-recall
Sounds like something is wrong with the pump. Make sure everything is plugged in. Change the membranes. DS refused to nurse during his ear infections & wasn't fond of it. After his tubes, he's gotten a little better but he's used to bottles. So I nurse through the night & in the am but he won't nurse long & is then fussy until he gets a bottle. Plus, he'll only nurse on one side. I'm depressed but I'm going to keep pumping & trying.
Did you take meds while you were sick? Look on kellymom. They could have helped dry the milk up.
You can try domperidone also. I'm doing that to get my supply up in hopes that DS is more interested in nursing.
