Methodist Sugar Land OR Memorial Hermann Med Center for delivery? Anxious FTM, would love some inpu

Hi ladies!

My husband and I toured Memorial Hermann in the Med Center this weekend and although it wasn't a bad experience at all, we both left not feeling 100% comfortable with delivering there?  The nurse leading the tour wasn't friendly and somewhat harsh.  Overall, I guess it just wasn't what I expected.

So, I was hoping that some of you might be able to share your delivery experiences at Memorial Hermann in the Med Center OR Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land (this is the other hospital we are considering).

I truly appreciate any input!!! Thanks in advance. :)

  • I've got experience with both!  I had my DD at MH Med Center and my DS at Methodist in Sugar Land.  I had a great experience at both places.  I had c-sections for both so I don't have expereince with the laboring and how helpful nurses are then.   But my recovery nurses were all great.

The major differences for me were that at MH the peds nurses and doctors were a little more aggressive about me supplementing my DD with formula. They kept telling me she's going to get dehydrated and scaring me into formula feeding while I was trying to get used to breastfeeding.   That didn't happen at Methodist.  And the other difference was that at Methodist they were not coming in and checking on my vitals as often as they did at MH.  Can't say that's a good or bad thing but I was able to get a little more rest at Methodist b/c I was woken every hour by nurses coming in to get my temp and blood pressure.

I'd say if you live in Sugar Land, Methodist is the way to go. Both facilities and nurses are good, but at Methodist you won't have to pay for parking and your DH can go home easily if yall forget something!

This makes sense now. Two of my friends delivered at MH (one Med Center and one SW) and both were kinda talked into (aggressively) formula feeding their babies. Both girls were unable to BF long because they got little support at the hospital about it.

I delivered at Methodist in the Med Center and had a great experience start to finish and they were very pro-breastfeeding. Never even mentioned formula and never gave her a pacifier either. I don't think you can go wrong with Methodist.

I do know a friend (the one who delivered at MH SW) considered Methodist in Sugarland and decided against it because they don't have a level 2 NICU or something like that? She was concerned about transporting the baby and such if that was needed.

  • I delivered at MH with both and won't deliver there again if we have more. My L&D nurse this time was AWFUL. She played on her phone while I was getting my epidural. She never checked on me - we had to find her to check for dilation, empty my bladder (epidural and she wouldn't do a catheter for some reason), she disappeared when I had major urge to push so a different nurse delivered me, a different nurse also helped me get up and use the restroom the first time and cleaned me up. I know bad nurses can happen anywhere but we also had a hard time getting info for our newborn after delivery both times and add that to the fact it's a good drive from home... We'll use CL Regional if there's a next time. Have been there with both sons for jaundice treatment and felt we had much better care there.

  • After reading the other replies - I wasn't impressed with the lactation consultants at MH this time. We had to supplement with formula both times but only because my children had severe jaundice so supplementing would happen anywhere.

  • I delivered at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land and had excellent care. I was happy with the nurses all through inducing through recovery. They made me very comfortable and were very helpful. They did have a lactaion consultant come by and she was very nice. I had no problem with the level of NICU the hospital had because I knew that if we needed to transport him there wouldn't be a problem.

Also, I think PAGAS had a friend who had a baby in the NICU there and she was pleased witht he care they received.

  • This has been SO helpful!  Thank you all!  Hoping to get a tour today! :)
  • I actually just toured Methodist SL and they do have Level 2 nursery!! It seemed really nice.  The nurse really showed us around, answered questions and gave us this great brochure that had alot of great info in it.

I had my first baby at Memorial SW and will NEVER GO BACK.  They did wake me up every hour so it seemed, but the worst part was when the new nurse came at shift change; she checked me and then she checked the baby.  She opened my baby's diaper and saw that there was  dirty diaper (bowel movement) and taped the diaper back up with out saying a word.  When I asked her if the diaper was dirty as I could of sworn I saw something there....  (note I had just had a c section and couldnt get up). She said she was  leaving the dirty diaper for me to change.  CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT CRAP?????????

My friends were there visiting and were just shocked at her behavior.  One of my girl friends ended up changing Kade's first diaper since the nurses at  Memorial SW were just too damn lazy to their jobs!

About 5 friends have delivered at Methodist SL and all have advised me to go there so I am taking it!!!

     Good Luck with everything.

  • Might be a little late in responding to this, but I delivered @ MH-TMC and LOVED it!, as did all of my other friends who delivered there.

My L&D nurses were amazing and I cannot say enough good things about them.

My choice was limited to MH TMC d/t insurance, but I was very satisfied with L&D.

PP on the other hand I wasn't impressed with. Nobody checked on me much, if at all. The nurses were great when you asked them questions but I just thought I should be checked on more.

We didn't get any pressure to Formula Feed, and I asked for it halfway through the night when he was still screaming hungry and BF'ing wasn't cutting it.

I also know some people who delivered @ methodist and they have a very good reputation as well.

I would also consider distance-- you don't want to be driving 30 minutes if you are in labor..

    Good luck :)

  • I delivered at Methodist in the Med Center and am biased toward Methodist for many reasons, so take my response with a grain of salt. :-)

One thing I like about the Methodist model of care is you don't have L&D in one place and PP in another.  It's all in one room (or at least that is the model in the Med Center).  The bed you are in when you deliver is the same bed you are in when you are recovering.  Babies room in with the mommies unless they need intensive care or if you ask them to take the baby to the nursery so you can sleep a little.

Methodist is very pro nursing.  I don't think they push nursing but will absolutely support that decision.  Before there were laws in place requiring all employers to make appropriate privacy/sanitation accommodations for nursing moms to pump (employees), Methodist had designated places at every hospital and in some even had pumps available (the hospital grade - you bring your own attachments and that's it).

But the vendors still leave bags with formula so if you are a FF mom you will get a crapload of free formula when you leave too (whether you are or not - and if you aren't you can donate it!).

If you live in Sugar Land, I can't see why you'd go to the med center for delivery - stay in Sugar Land where your visitors don't have to pay for parking, your husband can run home for creature comforts if he wants, etc.

Good luck no matter where you choose to go!
