So yay! We are finally going to get to CD because we'll be in a place with actual good water. woo!
So... all my CD friends have said that the way to keep your CD baby from gettind diaper rash is to change them more often.
But... what about nighttime (when the child starts sleeping through the night)? They all say to double-stuff the diaper so that it won't leak. But... wouldn't that lead to diaper rash?
Micah struggled horribly with rashes. She could only use certain wipes and certain disposables. I don't want to have to go there again if we don't have to!
Re: Possibly stupid cloth-diapering question
It's true: with cloth we change more often, because it doesn't hold as much liquid. Daycare checks her every hour, I check every hour and a half or two.
What kind of diapers are you planning on using? Most people use something stay-dry at night. I stuff the diaper pretty full and put a fleece-topped doubler on top as well, so her skin stays pretty dry. We don't have rash problems overnight, generally. I also often put some rash cream on her.
I do still battle some rash, but it's not terrible. She tends to get dry red patches, and starting solids is doing a bit of a number on her (such an ugly rash!) but triple paste + a liner has cleared it up.
If you do have trouble, you may need to end up using fitteds + fleece or wool covers for breathability. We're probably going to go to that for overnight because it helps with not having so much stuff trapped inside.
We've cloth diapered since day 1, and have never really had any issues with diaper rash. We have always used pocket diapers that have a fleece liner, so they keep baby's skin dry. I think more people run into diaper rash issues when using prefolds or fitteds without a fleece/stay-dry liner.
We use FuzziBunz during the day (when he was itty-bitty, we had a bunch of their XS sized diapers, now we use the one-size), and Happy Heineys at night, double-stuffed with the microfleece insert they come with, along with a hemp insert.
Other than if/when we know he's pooped, we've never really changed any more often than every 2 hours, and we can frequently go longer than that (although that's changing now that he's peeing more). Nighttime is not a problem at all. He tanks that diaper up (reeks of ammonia when I get him up), but his skin stays relatively dry.
Also, for what it's worth - I have another friend who CDs most of the time, but will use disposables when they are traveling and things of that sort. The only time her son has ever had diaper rash has been when she's put him in disposable. Once he's back in cloth, no more diaper rash.

Thanks ladies! I didn't think about the special liners. Duh.
A few of my friends highly recommend the Flip diapers (but using with cloth, not the disposable liners). They have a special stay-dry liner you can buy that is cloth... I'll buy those just for nighttime.
With my kids though, I'll have a good 6-9 months before he sleeps through the night.
unsolicited advice, don't buy all of one diaper. get a few of each different kind and give them a try before committing. Each diaper has it's own fit and you may find one works really well for you that doesn't work as well for someone else.
bring the girls over (meet your MIL at my place!) and I can show you what we've got if you're interested

Yes, this.
I'm more than happy to show off my stash too. I have mostly one-size pockets but still have my newborn stuff too. My pocket collection is ridiculously varied because I was trying almost everything to see what I got the best fit with.
Thanks ladies! The hard part is trying to find one that will be cheap enough to warrant it for my DH. Maybe we can have a GTG next week?
This may help with that factor!
there is a lady up here
www.babyreargear.com who is a wealth of information. I met her at a JBF sale and she was so knowledgeable and helped me so much. She has a newborn package that includes everything... and after two month's you return the newborn and get a credit towards the next set of diapers or a store credit. Works out to be $40 for two month's. Not bad, imo.
not sure if she has multiple of those though.
but I would be done with mine when your son is born. :-)
