One hour glucose tolerence test

So I took my glucose tolerence test last friday and much to my surprise I passed ( I am continually craving sweets and swore up and down that I would have gestational diabetes).  Not only did I pass, but my results were that my blood sugar was low (62).  I had eaten breakfast, lunch and snacks that day.  I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what (if anything) your doctor has done.  Mine seems ok with me eating more (I am worried about gaining too much).

Re: One hour glucose tolerence test

  • If your dr. says eat more, I'd do it. Mine said the same thing. I'm trying to keep my weight in check as well to some extent but there's a point where your body is going to do what it wants to do.

Mine was on the lower side in my first pregnancy and my dr. told me as long as I was feeling fine it probably was okay. Everyone's so different.

  • I wonder if the fact that you ate provided a lower blood sugar result.  I have always been told that you're supposed to fast for 8-12 hours before.

  • Eating would def. not make her sugar low. They way the body works is your body produces insulin in reaction to the food you eat to lower blood sugar (carbs and sugar = higher blood sugar, thus more insulin production etc.). When you have diabetes, this function does not work properly (various explanation based on what type of diabetes you have). Your bs will be higher because the body will not produce enough/any insulin to lower your blood sugar number. So if anything, eating a ton will make the number higher, if you truly have gd. However, fasting is not required, because if you drink the drink and wait an hour, a "normal" body will be able to regulate the bs from the drink and anything before it in that time frame of one hour until the blood draw, provided the drink is the last thing you eat.

  • OP, that is a pretty low number. I would def. follow up with the Dr. and keep eating small frequent meals. My DH is T1 and he can "feel" the negative effects of low blood sugar when he gets below 70. I would keep snacks or glucose pills with you at all times in case you start feeling dizzy or ill.
