The tragedy in Japan has me really thinking about what we would do if faced with the horror of what the people of Japan are dealing with. It is sooo easy to say "it won't happen here" and just go on, but it hit me tonight that we still do not have an emergency kit of any kind in our home. I said I was going to make one up after Ike (and I am in no way comparing Ike to Japan or to Katrina), but we obviously learned nothing from several days of no electricity, and damage to our home. So, if you have an emergency kit, what do you have in yours? How long will it sustain your family in the event that the unthinkable happens here? I am just curious as I think about getting something together finally.
Re: Another NBR: Emergency preparedness kits?
We have one, but it is dual purpose. My DH goes camping often, and he just stocks up when he comes home. There is a good first aid kit, dehydrated food, flashlights, and a small camp stove and gas. We also keep a 5 gallon water supply.
I didn't know he did it until the tsunami hit. I'm glad he mentioned it, because I would be stupid enough to not check there.

I feel like we have everything we would need, but it is all scattered throughout our house. I bet it is pretty important to keep it all together, I should really do that.
I just googled and got a good list: https://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/.
We have everything on it except for 3 gallons of water/person. That's a lot. We have 2 gallons and some water bottles.
And I feel a lot less worried too because my parents live right down the street and have a generator, but I guess I'm probably getting too old to rely on my parents too.
