Preemies

Having a hard time tonight

So I haven't actually had my baby yet but I was reading through some of the preemie posts as there is a good chance my LO is going to be a preemie.  I am 31w3d today and have been on bed rest for a week.  I was put on bed rest after having high blood pressure and baby was not growing properly.  After an ultrasound it was shown that the blood was not flowing properly through the umblilical cord.  After I was put on bed rest in the hospital for a few days I had another ultrasound and the blood flow appeared to be back to normal after my BP went down.  However, my doc informs me that it is almost certain that I will not be holding on 'till my due date.  As of right now this LO is staying inside but mon/wed/fri i get NST done and I have to check my BP 4 times a day and on Wednesdays I go to the hospital and get US done to check on the baby's growth.  So the decision to deliver/keep baby in is made on a weekly basis.  The thing I'm having a hard time with tonight is the fact that I could have a preemie.  This is something that I obviously wasn't expecting to happen and I"m having a hard time dealing with it.  I am just concerned with all the complications that come with preemie babies.  Thanks for reading and I look forward to getting some feedback from other mothers/moms to be out there.

Re: Having a hard time tonight

  • First of <<<hugs>> to you! Reading your post brought me back to my pregnancy experience. I'll share my story with you.  I was diagnosed with high BP around 32 weeks and was sent for a biophysical profile at the hospital a few days later. I was also put on bedrest at home. The biophysical profile came back as DD being very small for her gestational age (IUGR) I was put on hospital bedrest and had NST's done every few days. In the meantime I got steroid shots (which if you have not gotten yet I highly recommend you request) Well, I lasted about a week and a half and the NST came back with poor blood flow so they scheduled an induction for 34 weeks (DD was measuring the size of a 29 weeker). After being induced and not dialating and DD showing signs of distress I ended up with a c-section. DD was born 3lbs and 15in and thank goodness did not need any assistance breathing or eating. She simply needed to grow and had slight jaundice.

She spent 21 days in the NICU as a feeder/grower. It was definitely a tough experience but I knew she was in good hands. She is now a thriving 15 month old and you would never know she was a preemie besides the fact that she is a peanut!

Hang in there...the doctors will do what is best for you and LO. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! Keeping you in my thoughts!

  • Hi.... I just read your post and I can TOTALLY understand your emotions.  To give you a little background information..... I am currently 31w 3d today and have been on bed rest since 28w.  I was put on bed rest due to an incompetent cervix.  My cervix was measuring 0.6cm, which is basically almost being 100% effaced.

I was told by my Doctor that I will def NOT make it to my due date, which is May 10th.  Within the past two days, I have been having TONS of braxton hicks. My Doctor is trying to be hopefully that I will hold my LO in until atleast 34 weeks.

So, I am dealing with the fact (like yourself) that I am going to have a preemie.  At this point, my LO can come at any time.

With all that being said, I feel what you are saying.  I do tons of research every night just to try and put my mind at rest, in case she does come the next day.

As for your situation, I can say the good thing is your frequent visits to the Doctors. At this point, Im sure our babies will be fine, but as far as complications, I am wondering the same thing.

  • Hang in there. :::hugs::: You are in the best place you can be for your care, as well as your child's. I was on hospital bedrest for 7 weeks 3 days, dialated to 4CM and fully effaced. (I had delivered Twin A sleeping and stayed open until twin B came 1/28). Your doctors will try to keep you pregnant if that is the only thing they do. Try to think positive. Every day you hang on is another day to be thankful. I try not to think that I missed 13.5 weeks of my pregnancy, or another 7 to a hospital bed. I think of the miracle that Sam is here.

Be strong, mama. I'll be thinking of you.

Having a preemie is hard...but you are prepring yourself for it, which will take away a lot of the stress if/when it actually does happen.

Have you had sterois shots to develop baby's lungs?  31 weeks is scary, but prems at this stage usually do quite well.  My 3 year-old was born at 31 weeks, 3lbs 14 oz.  5 weeks in NICU, and is now happy and healthy!  My 5 year old was born at 33 weeks, 5lbs 5 oz, and is also doing great!

    Hang in there!

  • Thank you all for your responses.  I have had the steroid shots already.  That was one of the first things they did when I started having the high blood pressure.  I know that LO will be in the best of care once born, I think the thing I was having the hardest time with was the fact that I might have to leave the baby at the hospital and go home without LO.  I had a little talk with my husband last night about the whole thing and I felt a lot better.  He has been so amazing through this entire thing and continues to be my best support.  I have my ultrasound in a few days and I am so looking forward to seeing my LO.  The ultrasounds are the most reassuring part and I look so forward to them every week.  Again, thank you all for your responses.  It's great to know that I am not the only person in the world going through this and having these feelings.

  • T&P that baby stays inside for more more weeks!!
