3rd Trimester

what if I go into labor but have a C-Section planned?

Has anyone had this happen?  This is my first pregnancy and for multiple reasons I am planned for a c-Section on the 21st.  I am 38 weeks and a few days right now.  My hubby keeps asking what happens if I go into labor.  I know go to the hospital and call my doctor but when I got to the hospital I would still get a c-section right?  I know sounds silly but but you know pregnancy moods!

  • I'm assuming it is from complications and such that you are having a c-section.

If you go into labor get to the hospital ASAP! That way they can do a c-section right away, hopefully without having to knock you all the way out. I would just let the hospital know why you are having a c-section. They will also call/page your doctor when you come in or if you call them on your way.

  • Yes you would still have a c section provided you got to the hospital in time.

  • I'm going to have a repeat c-section.  When i scheduled it my dr's office told me that if i was to go into labor before the c section date to notify the hospital once i got there.  They would perform the c-section as planned.

  • I asked my Dr about this too, but my c/s is because my LO is breech.  He said that it would become an emergency c/s rather than a regular planned one.
  • This happened to me.  My baby was breech so I had a C-section planned for Nov. 18th.  Well it just so happens that I went into labor the day before.  My C-section was scheduled for 1:00pm and we were supposed to be at the hospital at 10:30am.  Well all day the day before I was having some back pain.  We went out to dinner that night and when we got home the back pain was worse and I honestly thought I was just constipated.  So from like 10:00 until 2:30am I kept trying to go to the bathroom.  I would never have gone to the hospital if it was not for the fact that I started spotting.  So at 3:00am we were off to the hospital.  When we got there they informed me that I was 6cm dilated.  I told my doc that I had no idea I was even in labor and that I was going to wait out the pain until the time we were scheduled.  She told me that if I had waited that I would have had that baby at home.  If you want this whole story I posted a birth story under February births 2010 under the c-section part.  They rushed me into the OR and I just had my c-section a few hours earlier.

  • first off, it totally depends on WHY you're having the c section. if it's just a repeat because you had one the first time, i'd ask the doc if they'd be comfortable with a vbac, that is if YOU'RE comfortable with one too.

i have heard docs offer that option to rcs patients, that if they go into labor naturally, they can go ahead and try for delivery as well.

if you're not going to go that route, you just go to the hospital, call your doc immediately and they'll take you in for a cs just like planned.... but earlier :)

look at it this way, at least you'd get a spontaneous birth date!

  • If you think you're in labor call your dr right away. If you are in fact in labor they will do the c/s earlier. I was in early labor the morning of my scheduled c/s at 38w1d
