If you have had this done, what was it like? Also, what were the indications to actually have the test done? Did your child have reflux only, or other issues? What was done with the results?
We are looking at this as a possibility, and I am just beginning to research.
Re: Severe refluxers: PH Study anyone?
My DS had one. It wasn't terrible. They drop a probe similarly to an ng tube. It measures the acid level. You document everything (feedings, spit-ups, hiccups, etc). They then look at the readings compared your notes. We did it when DS's feeding issues and stomach issues intensified. DS showed that he had a fairly high acid level on a consistent basis. We had ours done outpatient.
My niece had two done. Once while admitted and once outpatient as well.
Hi, my daughter had this done when she was in the NICU. She was very young, and already hooked up to lots of tubes and wires so it sort of fit right in. They were able to tell that yes, she had severe reflux and that it should be controllable by medication. I'm not sure what the point of it was because we kind of already knew that... except medication only helped a little at that point. I think they put her on Prilosec after the results were in.
Your question is a good one-- what will they do with the results? If it's different than the diagnosis they have now then it may be worth it, but if they don't have a clear course of action then it might not be worth it.
Sorry I'm not more helpful...
