Melanoma

Has anyone else had or have melanoma?  I am 28 weeks and was just diagnosed with desmoplastic melanoma.  I saw the surgeon Thursday and he said he could take the area and the area around it with a local anesthesia.  I am scared but feel like I am in good hands.

If you had this type of surgery could you please let me know what to expect.

 Thanks so much.

Re: Melanoma

  • My twin sister has had melanoma twice and both times she has surgery to remove more skin and tissue. She has to take a day off from work due to the drugs, and then is sore for a few days afterwards. Both of the times she has a nice thin scar about 2-3 inches long. She is really active, and had to take a week off from running, and no swimming for a couple of weeks. As scary as this is, I think keeping a positive attitude is the best way to deal with this. I wish you the BEST of luck, and am keeping you in my thoughts.

  • I had Melanoma too! Very scary stuff.  I had mine on my back and had it removed by my dermatologist. It was in the middle of my back.  The surgery really wasn't that bad, the numbing hurt but once that was over, no big deal.  Then the numbing wore off and it hurt.  I also wasn't able to do much because of where it was at. Everytime I moved my arms and stretched my back I could feel it pulling, it opened up a little because of that. Mine was really deep also, he had to remove all the way down to the muscle.

Anyway, you will be sore but its good you caught it now! Good Luck with everything!

  • While I didn't have Melanoma, I had basal cell skin cancer on my back. The dermatologist removed it in a similar way that the others have described. He numbed it and cut it out, then cauterized (sp) it. While it didn't hurt, I did not have a good experience with the numbing agent, and it actually caused me to faint due to extreme decrease in BP. My brother, who is a doctor, told me that he would recommend lying down and that might help with maintaining the BP. Hopefully there won't be a next time.
