Belly sleeping

DD always wants to sleep on us, for naps, overnight, all the time.  Today she was sleeping on my chest after she ate, and DH suggested we pull her pack n play out to the living room and put her down on her belly in there.  She slept for 2.5 hours straight!  She woke up, ate again, and went back down on her belly in her pnp and has been sleeping for the past hour and a half!  I've gotten so much done today!!!  I'm so tempted to put her down on her belly overnight...but too scared to actually do it.  Sigh.

Anyone else's babies prefer tummy sleeping?  And 2nd time moms actually let their babies sleep on their tummy overnight?

Re: Belly sleeping

  • I let her sleep on her side during naps (on the boppy), but I only do back at night.  She's in her crib in her room & it would make me nervous.  If she's in your room, then it should be fine to try.

  • This is something that even the experts go back and forth on. When I had my son seven years ago, it was tummy sleeping. When I had my dd four years ago, it was side sleeping and now it it sleeping on their backs that is best.

I am not that comfortable with tummy sleeping but if you want to give it a shot, no one will be there to haul you off to jail if you do. It is a recommendation, thats all.

  • People may want to slam me for this (my mom does) but im convinced my baby LOVES sleeping on her stomach. Shes three weeks and started at about two weeks. Even if i do have her on her back or side she will roll over and sleep so soundly for hours...even for naps. She also loves to fall asleep on hubbys chest or just while were holding her, which i hope she grows out of, but i like it for now, lol. I know its a risk for SIDS and what not, but there are so many risks out there that we dont consider on a daily basis. She's happy and healthy, mommys happy and people have been doing it since the beginning of time. If your ok with it, go ahead and let it be!
  • My DD sleeps way better on her belly! She refuses to sleep in her crib or pack and play, hates being flat. BUT I won't let her sleep on her belly in her crib or her pack and play or anywhere except on my chest basically. I'm just too afraid of the risk. I know that the experts have gone back and forth about it and all, but I couldn't live with myself if god forbid something happened to my LO and I knew that I could've prevented it. When I give my LO a little bit of tummy time she sometimes will put her little head down with her face against the floor and she either doesn't know exactly yet how to turn it, or just gets lazy or tired. Easy to see how a baby could accidentally hurt themselves when we as parents are asleep or not staring at our monitor! Just my opinion, but I'm a guideline follower on this one!

  • DS is a very gassy baby so I've let him nap across my lap on his belly a few times. Today during tummy time he put his head down and fell asleep. I let him sleep -peacefully- for an hour. He farted the whole time! It really helped him get the gas out.

  • I know its not right, but we let DD sleep on her tummy during the day in her crib. We do have an angelcare monitor in her crib so that makes me feel better. Plus my pedi actually recommended it to me, in her words as a pedi I can't endorse it, but as a mom of four kids I will tell you sometimes you can't always do what's recommended. She said during the day it should be fine because you can check on them more frequently. So we do tummy sleeping during the day and then sleep her in the RnP at night. I'm still not comfortable doing night time yet, but luckily she sleeps well in her RnP.

  • I sleep my LO on his belly during the day, because he is getting a flat spot on the left side of his head, he has rolled himself on his side since day one.  It kind of makes me uncomfortable to try it at night but at the same time I know that's how I was put down as a baby as well as my brother and my sister.  As a pp stated it is constantly changing what the current sleeping recommendation is.  If it is what works for you and makes it so you can get some much needed sleep, then sleep your LO on their belly, I'm sure I'm not the only one posting here that was put to sleep on their belly as a baby.

One thing I have always said is that SIDS is called SIDS for a reason, because they don't know the cause.  Now that doesn't make it any easier for someone who has lost a baby to SIDS but honestly I don't think it is something you can really protect your child from.

  • I have 2 older kids that did fine with tummy sleeping. I always waited until their necks were stong enough to lift their heads though. LO is almost 5 weeks and Ive let him nap during the day on his tummy but soon will be putting him to bed on his tummy too. That's when my older ones slept through the night so I'm hoping it works this time too.
