Baby Names

philippa

i just checked nancy's list and i can't believe that philippa is so rare in the US. i like the name [and the horse part of the meaning that goes with bay/ bayard] and think it's pretty on paper but is the pronunciation too weird?

for some reason, even though it's a completely legitimate name with lots of history, i can't help but get over the fact that it's philip with a couple of extra letters.

do you think it's one of those names that won't be well-received because it's unfamiliar to some people?

  • I like Philippa... suprisingly, b/c it isn't like my typical style. I like the PP suggestion of Pippa as a nn too.

  • I really, really love Philippa. I started loving it when I read Anne of the Island. I also really love the nn Pippa. :) I do feel that some people might look at it strangely, but it's a legitimate name and certainly I would give McKinzee more of a side-eye and a wince than Philippa, which is a classic!

  • I love that name. I would call her Pippa. DH doesn't like it. He is half Filipino, and he said he would be afraid someone would think Philippines and Philippa were some how connected...and we would have to constantly address that.. I like a lit of p names, Poppy, Piper, and Pippa...

  • I think uncommon names are becoming more accepted  these days. I've heard a lot of namers consider Phillipa recently. Lovely pick.

  • I knew a Philippa in high school. She wore it well. I think it is a lovely name and it goes well with Bay. I also think the PP suggestions for NNs are cute for a little girl (especially Pippa)
  • I love it but I am a mother to a Philip, so I'm partial anyway. I think the nn Pippa is so sweet.

  • I like it ever since I read a Madeleine L'Engle book with a main character by this name. (The book is "And Both Were Young.") I also like the nn Pippa.

  • I absolutely love it.

My two hesitations are that she will be half filipino so I worry about people thinking there is some sort of connection, and also that I have an uncle Philip which makes it seem a bit weird.

  • I really like it. And I think Pippa is an awesome and adorable nickname.

  • I love Philippa! I generally tend to like obviously feminized names. That probably makes no sense.

  • Cute!  Pippa is especially darling.
  • thanks for the replies! pippa is definitely the nickname i would use, too. i've always loved poppy but we have 2 grandfathers who are called poppy/ poppie so that wouldn't work. i guess i was always familiar with the name so i figured it would be more popular than it is.

also, appellation mountain had it as name of the day here and one of the replies was from a philippa who said she has trouble when introducing herself because people don't understand how to say the name. just covering my bases to see what i should keep on my girl list :)

Excellent, beautiful name.  Fun fact, Kate Middleton's sister's name is Philippa and she goes by Pippa so as their wedding approaches we'll probably be hearing this name a little bit more in the media since Pippa is the MOH.  I think it's obviously a lot more common in England, but I don't think it's too obscure over here, and like I pointed out, media coverage of the wedding should help increase its "familiarity".  Awesome choice.

  • I love Philippa, but my DH looks at me like I'm on crack when I bring it up, so I've given up. I think it's a great name, which is odd because usually that sort of name just really isn't my style.

that's exactly me, too. i normally wouldn't choose it but for some reason it appeals to me. i also like the fact that even though it's a female name, it isn't frilly so it looks better with bay's name. my h hates it, too, but i've won him over on names before :)
