1st Trimester

Hungry all the time!

So I'm just over 7 weeks along and so far it has been an easy pregnancy. Very little nausea. I only feel nauseous if I am very hungry and don't eat. The problem is, I'm hungry ALL the time. Will this subside later in the pregnancy? I used to be able to go to work and not eat a thing for the 5-8 hours I was there, now by the second or third hour I've already eaten enough to last me a day (pre-pregnancy). It is interfering with day to day stuff. I'll be fine one second then BAM! I'm starving, and if I don't eat, I feel like I'll be sick and pass out. Should I give in to all the hunger or try to ignore some of it? Is there anything small I can eat that will leave me feeling full and satisfied? I'm so confused. I'm bloated and starving at the same time, and thinking about eating makes me feel sick, but not eating does the same.

Re: Hungry all the time!

  • I've been trying to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. That helps. Also, I carry around healthy snacks like almonds and fruit.

  • Yes the nausea until you eat should subside and constant starving should subside. I think mine ended mid 2nd tri with #1.

  • Oh thank goodness! I don't think I could keep this up for 40 weeks! There isn't enough food in the world! Ha!
  • It got better for me around week 10.  I no longer have to eat every 1-2 hours (thank goodness because I already gained 8 pounds!)  But for me I much prefer the eating over the nausea, so if you need to - just eat!!!

  • I am hungry all the time too and I am just 4 weeks along. No nausea yet or cravings but hungry every 2 or 3 hours. Going to the grocery store for heallthy snacks/fruit shortly.

  • Week 10 sounds even better to me!

Part of the problem is I am so bloated that I don't WANT to eat anything. I've been eating so much and I am to the point where just looking at food is making me feel sick.

  • Contrary to what a pp said, I do not think it subsides later in pregnancy (I'm 38 weeks). The past month, I am hungry less than an hour after I eat. Eat small meals/snacks and eat more often. Don't just eat carbs, couple protein with it as protein fills you up more.

This.  i am past due and still have to eat every 3 hours. like you in first tri i would get sick if i didn't eat the only difference now is i can sustain longer in between meals without eating someones arm off or cussing someone out:) and portions are smaller, thank god......everyone told me too that it would go away, but it never did for me and i've gained the 60 lbs to prove it.  i made and still make good food choices and that's about all you can do....eat protein with every meal, it takes longer to digest and fiber fills you up too.

  • I am going through the EXACT same thing!  I keep telling DH how cruel it is that mother nature makes me SO hungry, yet the thought of food makes me nauseous! That's just not fair, right? LOL  ; )

In my limited experience so far, the best plan is to ALWAYS be prepared and have food available and eat when you're hungry, do not ignore it.  I keep almonds, dried apricots, string cheese, yogurt, carrot sticks, granola bars, grapes, saltines, apples/apple slices and peanut butter available at all times with me at work.  Just nibble on something and see if it helps, have a little bit of water or ginger ale, and keep nibbling until you feel better. Like you I'm hoping it will pass after the 1st Tri but not holding my breath!  Good Luck!

  • You will likely feel much better if you eat small amounts frequently.  This keeps your blood sugar level preventing nausea, makes digestion easier, prevents heartburn.  Keep lots of healthy snacks on hand and be sure to eat more than just carbs.  This time of year I love the little cutie oranges as a quick and easy snack.  I packed asparagus/leek quiche for breakfast and black bean soup for lunch as well as 2 different kinds of yogurt, oranges, bananas and some bread to munch on.

The second tri is really the one where you'll likely feel your best.  Some of this stuff returns in the third tri just because everything is so squished by the baby that is overtaking space, so something like eating a huge meal will make you feel plan yucky.
