nothing is helping with heartburn

My heartburn has been so bad the past couple days.   The burning has made me throw up 4 times!    I have tried Tums, Mylanta, Zantac, pickle juice.   Nothing helps.   Plain white bread is giving me heartburn.

I am miserable.  I have an appt on Thursday so I will be bringing this up there but at the rate i'm going, I'm not going to make it to then.

Re: nothing is helping with heartburn

  • Oh no, that's awful! I hope your doctor can offer you something else to relieve your pain. Heartburn is the WORST! I dread what will happen when Zantac stops working for me.

  • I have been trying everything too. The only thing that has helped (hasn't eliminated the heartburn, but it takes the edge off) is to make a sort of tea out of apple cider vinegar and honey. I warm up water just enough to melt the honey and put in about 2 Tbs. of vinegar and 1 of honey. The nice thing about it is that you can take it as often as you want. I hope this helps.
  • My doctor told me to take Pepcid AC....it was like a miracle.  I only have to take one each day and I am FINE!!! Maybe your doctor will say yes to that too.

  • I've had GERD for 10 or so years and take rx Prevacid.  When it gets really bad everything makes it worse.  If you haven't tried this already, sleeping at an incline really helps.  I sleep on my side with one medium pillow under my ribcage and two under my head (one flatter one fluffier).  It kind of evens out at the neck to keep it inline with my spine.

Also, try eating smaller meals throughout the day and snacking.  If there's something in your stomach the acid has to work on the food and it can sometimes relieve the awful feeling.

    Good luck!

  • I feel you!  When I get it, nothing really cuts it.  My doctor said I can take Prilosec OTC; b/c she said I may need something to get things moving through and not neutralized?.?...I haven't tried it but it may help.

  • Oh man, I feel your pain. The other night I had been asleep for 30 minutes & woke up choking/coughing on acid. I take Nexium (prescribed by OB) every morning but it's getting to the point that's not working quite as well & I have to take tums every once and a while. I took Protonix with my first DD and that was AMAZING. I really hope you get relief soon.

I discovered this last night! It was like magic.

  • Sorry to hear! It sounds like the same boat I am in.  I had hyperemesis from week 5 to week 19 and the dr thinks it did some damage. Now I get heart burn all the time so when I wake up I am throwing up. His thought is reflux so I am now on Nexium. He wanted to put me on protonics for reflux but my insurance would not cover it until I tried Nexium first.

Hopefully your DR will give you some relief at your next appointment or if it gets really bad call them and explain what is going on. Good luck.

  • A Turkish woman recently told me to eat a handful of almonds in the afternoon and evening. That in addition to sleeping on an incline and drinking one mug of plain, hot water first thing in the morning has helped me. Hasn't gone completely away but had gotten a bit better.

thanks everyone.   I'll think I'll try the Pepcid AC next.   I'll give her a call tomorrow to make sure it's still on her list.   When I had horrible heartburn with DS too but it didn't reach this point until I was 30/31 weeks and she said try Zantac or Pepcid.   I had a coupon for Zantac so I tried that first and it worked.   So when it started getting bad again, I went right to the Zantac.

  • Try milk! If not regular milk, almond milk helps also. I actually get heartburn from Tums themselves, but a glass of milk really helps!
  • Try apple cider vinegar.

lol...only problem is I hate mustard!   The smell/taste of it makes me gag even when I'm not PG.

To the milk suggestions....I've tried that too....that usually helps take the edge off but it hasn't worked all weekend...and puking milk back up is not pretty!

  • Try Prevacid! It is a miracle drug, I swear. My acid reflux was just as bad as yours and now it is non-existent. It was on the list from my OB for okay over the counter drugs to take.
