Cincinnati Babies

starting solids question

We have started our babies on solids.  They have had rice cereal, and two days ago I gave them sweet potatoes to start veggies.  One of the twins hasn't really been so into eating solids, so we aren't pushing it... just trying every so often.  The other one however, really loved the sweet potatoes and ate half the container.  well, a day later and she's since had two disgusting blowout poops and is farting like crazy.  I think the sweet potatoes are messing with her poor little tummy.  So, my question is... what should I do?  Should I stop solids all together and try them again in a couple weeks?  Our pedi told us to start at four months, but I waited until last week...t hey are five months on tuesday.  and when i try them again... should i just give a couple spoonfulls and not give her so much at once?  Was that the issue?  that i let her eat half the container??  Sorry... i'm new to this.

Re: starting solids question

  • I dont really have many suggestions except to maybe not give as much at one time but I have a hard time judging what a typically developing child would be eating at each different age. FWIW we started DS on table food (pureed veggies) at about 5.5 months. We didnt really ever do rice cereal/oatmeal except to mix it in with the pureed veggies and we started with green beans. DS didnt have problems but he also was only taking maybe a tbsp at a time.

Next time only give her a few spoonfuls and see how that goes. I think that the gas and poop issues are probably normal since it is hard on their little tummies regardless of their age/what they eat since up until this point they have only had BM or formula which is much gentler. You could also try maybe doing the rice cereal since you can thin it out a little more and its pretty gentle and mild in taste and texture. Even a stage 1 sweet potato might have been too much for her belly at first. HTH!
