Losing weight

How do you excerise while pregnant, whats a good way to lose weight, I want a natural birth unless other wise, but my doctor says the bigger the closer away from a natural birth.

Re: Losing weight

  • Well you definitely don't want to lose weight intentionally while pregnant (I say intentionally because some women lose weight in the first trimester due to extreme morning sickness). If you are at a normal weight now, you should gain around 30lbs while pregnant.

But most people can exercise while pregnant. I say most people because there are some people with high risk pregnancies that shouldn't exercise so it is best to check with your doctor. It is recommended that you don't start any new exercises but you can continue to do most things while pregnant that you were doing pre-pregnancy (within reason of course). Some doctors say while exercising you should keep your heartrate below 140 bpm, but most now just say listen to your body, and don't exert yourself beyond the point where you could carry on a conversation while exercising.

Regarding your last statement, I'm not sure what you mean by "the bigger the closer away from natural birth".

Do you mean you were overweight before you got pregnant?

  • you dont want to lose weight when you are pregnant. you can do what you did before you got pregnant for exercise. now is no the time to do anything new. if you never exercised, walk, do prenatal yoga, lift light weights. get some prenatal dvd's.

I think the last question is your doctor said the bigger you are the more likely you wont have a natural childbirth. i think the concerns are more high blood pressure and more complications if you are overweight.

    good luck.

  • If you are severely obese, have a serious discussion with your doctor about your options and, much more important than watching the scale, how you can learn to improve your diet. If appropriate, he might refer you to a nutritionist.

A friend of mine lost weight while she was pregnant, but she was severely obese and was told that she could not conceive. Once she found out that she was pregnant, she started to take care of herself and treat her body well. She was absolutely not trying to lose weight, but it is hard to maintain obesity, grow a baby, and fit in all of the fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein that you need. I'm not even sure that what she did would have been totally approved of by a doctor.

That said, I need to reiterate that it is NOT something that you want to do without close medical supervision. I'm sure that your doctor wouldn't recommend any exercise more strenuous than walking at this point if that is what your body is use to.
