we don't have a lot of books for H and we try to read to her a couple times a day. i'd like to get some more so we have more options - esp. since most of them are geared towards sleeping. board books would be good so i can turn them with one hand now and we can keep using them once she is older.
we do have "where is the green sheep?", "guess how much i love you", and "how many kisses do you want?" that aren't sleep oriented. ![]()
Re: favorite children's books?
they make so many board books that are also non board books...
eric carle books are great (brown bear brown bear) and all teh spin off books
we love karen kurtz flip books
you're not my puppy
any books with little mirrors in them
pat the bunny
spot books
boynton board books (the bellybutton book) and i forget the other titles
you can google for best childrens board books to get more ideas:-)
we also enjoy anything that you can touch and feel
I ditto doggylovr's suggestions...
Our library has a great board book selection that I've been relying on since DS was about 6 mos old.
Some favorites have been:
the Todd Snow books (You are Beautiful, You are Important, etc).
He's currently into the "How do Dinosaurs" series
The Caillou books
WE also loved Mama, Mama and Papa, Papa. They are so sweet, very short and easy, with beautiful pictures. Baby Cakes is another favorite.
Last, it's not a board book, but DD has loved it since very early because it's got a beautiful rhythm and rhyme to it and great pictures - Baby Danced the Polka.
We seem to be slowly collecting everything Sandra Boynton has written
We have volumes 1 and 2 of box sets of her "Greatest Hits," plus Belly Button Book, Pajama Time, Barnyard Dance, Hey, Wake Up! and Your Personal Penguin. DS loves them, and even before he had an opinion, I enjoyed reading them to him.
Some other favorites -- a variety of Dr. Seuss (mainly the shorter ones for now), Five Silly Monkeys, The Snowy Day, Pat the Bunny, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Where is Baby's Belly Button? (Katz), Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, and The Little Engine that Could.
Ditto all of the above...DS is obsessed with books, so we have a ton, plus I'm a teacher so I may have a minor obsession as well!
Others we like that aren't sleep oriented: All the Biscuit books, many of them are the "touchy" ones, Wheels on the Bus, I Love You Stinky Face, Baby Boo, Curious George, Are You Ticklish (also a "touchy" one)
Ditto the Eric Carle and Sandra Boynton books. Her "Doggies" book is cute and simple, and I also love the Bellybutton Book.
Also ditto pp's recommendation for "Mama, Mama" and "Papa, Papa." They're short, simple books, but very sweet and good for nights when LO won't sit still for more than a minute.
Someone gave us a book called "Goodnight, Gorilla" about a zookeeper who is followed home by a bunch of zoo animals (including a gorilla) and they all climb into bed with him. I really like that one.
Someone else gave us a series of books called "Little Pea" (about a pea who complains about having to eat candy for dinner), "Little Hoot" (about an owl who doesn't want to stay up late) and "Little Pig" (about a pig who likes being clean and doesn't want to get dirty). I think the stories are more for toddlers, but the books are cute and I enjoy reading them.
We have a lot of books, but I just ordered more because I get tired of reading the same ones over and over again! The library has board books to check out, too. It's a good way to sample books before deciding whether to buy them.
another rec for the boynton books.
dd was CRACKING UP over one of them tonight.
Yet another vote for the Boynton books, they are really cute and DD loves them. She also loves Goodnight Moon and Good Night, Gorilla (though they are both bedtime related, and Good Nigh Gorilla doesn't have many words and you have to sort of talk through the pictures).
We also like:
I Love You Through and Through
How Do I Love You?
Counting Kisses (though its a bedtime book)
Ten Tiny Tickles
Tomie's Little Mother Goose
In addition to all the other great suggestions (we are a big book household!):
Owl Babies
Miss Spider's ABCs
We're Going on A Bear Hunt
Sheep in a Jeep
Jamboree
Haha, my neighbor's son has this one and I have read it to him about a thousand times.
"Jeep for sale. Cheap". LOL.
Thanks everyone, these are great lists. I'll have to start checking some out from the library to see which ones we really like enough to buy.
I'll try not to repeat all the other fabulous suggestions. Many are favorites here too. DD loves books with nursery rhyme in them because I sing them to her. There are quite a few Seuss Early Reader ones DD love LIke There's a Wocket in My Pocket, Green Eggs and Ham, Farmer Brown Can Moo, and The Foot Book. There are little Board Books with Finger Puppets in them - we have The LIttle Bunny and The Little Panda - DD LOVES the finger puppet plus book. Harry the Dirty Dog, a classic from when my parents were little was a recent hit as well. DD also loves The Golden Egg Book. There aren't many books that we've purchased that DD hasn't loved.
