Need to gain weight...best way?

I'm 12 weeks and have officially lost the 2 pounds I'd gained since I first found out I was pregnant--awful m/s. Any suggestions on some things I can eat to pack on the pounds? Thanks!

  • I don't think you need to make an effort to "pack on the pounds." Has your doctor expressed concern? Until then, enjoy being able to wear all your pre-preg clothes (I envy that). Eat when you're hungry, try to eat healthy (but indulge when you want), and the baby will take the nutrients it needs. :)

  • I don't think you need to worry! I have lost 12 lbs, and I have a friend who lost 30 in the first three months. I would do exactly what ktshafra said and just let the scale move when it wants.

  • I agree you should talk to your dr. to see what they recommend. I was underweight when I got pregnant and have lost about 5 pounds. Considering I am almost 15 weeks, they are concerned and gave me a weight gain "diet" to follow. They also had me buy a pregnancy weight gain shake that I drink once a day.

  • If the doctor hasn't expressed concern, I wouldn't be too worried.

That said, I know sometimes it is a concern.  At about 20 weeks pregnant with DS I was on a "gain weight" diet.  You quickly find the foods packed with nutrients - I ate a lot of peanut butter, eggs, nuts and added avacado to everything!

Just eat healthy foods. Eat when you are hungry. I find myself being more hungry frequently so I just have healthy snacks around.

  • You don't need to do anything. Weight will pack up, no worries. I have had ZERO morning sickness and as of this morning, 14w1d, I've only gained 3lbs. Which was about the same the first time around. By the time I delivered I had put on a grand total of 32lbs. All while eating healthy and going to the gym 3 days a week. I hope you do not become one of those that complain about having gained too much weight in their 3rd trimester.

  • I lost 4 lbs between 8 wks and 12 wks...but I think that was mostly due to eating better & not drinking. I dont think I've gained anything additional yet - so I am waiting for the dr's appointment at 16 weeks to see if i need to do anything. Don't worry unless the Dr tells you otherwise

  • I still haven't gained weight and I'm almost 15w. My OB saidnot to worry, I will gain plenty here soon enough.

  • With my last pregnancy, I only gained 12 pounds overall by the time she was born at 40 weeks. The dr was concerned and had me do non-stress tests weekly. She thought the baby was going to be too small. She was born at 6 lbs 11 oz and 21 inches, so definitely not small. My dr recommended a weight gain diet in third trimester, just to eat more nuts, nut butters, avocado, etc - healthy non-animal fats.

  • I have lost 7 pounds, and when I expressed my concern to my OB he said, "We will keep an eye on it, but as long as the baby is growing, that's all I care about" So I'm not too worried. I do feel bad because I know I'm not eating the recommended calories a day.....but I'm just not hungry. I'm hoping the hunger phase kicks in soon like all my mommy friends say it will!

I agree. You're body will gain weight. Adding fat to your diet is not what you need.

  • Don't worry about it yet if your OB isn't worried.

I've lost some where between 20 and 25 lbs since getting pregnant and my OB isn't worried about it. I was a little over weight (40ish lbs?) when I got pregnant, so they say that I'm still well in the OK zone, but I'm really close to the "worried" line.

  • As the rest have said, healthy fats like nuts and avocado will get you there soon enough.  If you're really worried about it, my doctor, the "worry wart" I called her, had me drinking Ensure nutritional shakes.
