We've been together 5 years, but we bought a house a little over a year ago and I had no idea if DH was up for all the home improvement projects I had planned because we always lived in apartments. He's great at fixing cars, but so far I had done all of the house projects myself.
Now he's doing the baby's room and it is not going very well! We bought a dresser from IKEA and the top was damaged, so we spent half the day last Saturday returning it for a new piece. We get home, he screws in the top piece, goes to tighten the very first screw he put in and and says uh-oh. He used the wrong screw and busted through the top. So now we still have a damaged top. I managed to fix it to where it is not super noticeable and we are going to put the changing pad over it.
Today he goes to touch up the white paint on the ceiling because he got some blue paint on it. I told him the white paint is in the little square plastic container on the bottom shelf in the garage. After he finishes and is washing the paint brushes, he says, Which paint can was it again? I go into the room and he has touched up the ceiling with the sage GREEN paint I used for the guest room! He said he thought it would dry white. It was in a full size round paint can on the garage floor, nothing like the one I told him to use. I was so annoyed at him for not listening, but he is fixing it now. I'm sure I will see the humor in this later... I think from now on, I should get him to do the heavy lifting, but take care of the details myself!
Re: DH is so not a Handyman!
Lol, that sounds like my DH. He's definitely not a handy man. He's always strong arming things and not paying attention to what he's doing ( I could totally see him touching up white paint with green).
The sad thing is that he's an electrician, and a really good one at that! Our house has a top notch new electrical service and the safest wiring out there.
He's just not a carpenter, nor is he mechanically minded in any way. I usually am the one that assembles or builds things in our house. If I have DH build anything I have to draw out very specific plans with detailed diagrams and directions. Then the projects are usually acceptable, but lacking finesse or decent finishing.
He really tries to be handy though, and I must say that his dry walling skills have improved drastically in the past few years.
