Baby "Ankle" Socks - PITA?

I figure young babies don't need that many socks, but I'd assume you'd need to buy a few ... I was looking at ON's baby clothes, and noticed today there are many kinds of socks ... regular (the kind you fold over) and ankle (no folding). Make sense I guess! As an adult I personally hate the restrictive feeling of regular socks (especially in hot Arizona) ... I only wear ankle.

However, I can see how baby ankle socks might not make as much sense ... do they get kicked off/lost easier?

Any advice from second-time mommies?

  • I hate them, you lose them all the time.

  • Love them!!  We've never had a problem with them getting kicked off.  These are all we use unless it's really cold out or he's wearing his high-top work boots. DH has put them on with the boots, I just think it would be really uncomfortable, DS doesn't care.

In our family/home babies ALWAYS wear socks, so you'd definitely need more than just a few pairs.

  • actually socks are very useful considering your baby's feet will get cold without them...

having said that, i hate ankle socks and my son constantly kicks them off. they were essentially useless for us.

  • My big freakout before I delivered DS was that I didn't have any socks for him, but then I realized pretty much every outfit of his had footies.......so I didn't even put socks on him for a while.

But, my favorite are the crew socks...I like Hanes from Target. They don't fold over (I hate Gymboree and Circo ones that do) but they aren't low ankle socks. Plus, they have the rubbery bottoms, which don't mean much until they are walking, but I love 'em. And, they're cheap.

  • We never had a problem with DS and socks falling off.  Most of the time he was in the 'ankle' type socks.

  • The Triple Roll socks from Old Navy are good. As a newborn, my son never wore socks. Most newborn outfits have feet attached.

  • Even for summer babies, socks are a must.  A lot of babies' feet get really cold very easily, and sometimes they even turn blue (like my son's).  It's harmless, but as a first time mom, you freak.  So, I put socks on my winter baby, even under footies... especially at night.

Ankle socks are great with shoes, if you like the no sock look, but as far as at home, I would go with the regular socks.  Even the regular ones get kicked off super easy, I can only imagine using ankle socks without shoes on!

  • The best socks I ever found for my daughter are at Wal-Mart.  They are their clothing brand (can't think of what it is off the top of my head.  Anyway they are like little baby tube socks and come in a package of like 10: all white or assorted colors.  They were the only socks that actually stayed on her little feet.

  • I know this is goofy, but I never wanted my baby to look "dorky" and those foldover socks looked dorky to me. I've gotten Ds OshKosh and Old Navy ankle socks since he was quite small and they've always stayed on wonderfully.

Simple solutions work best, for simple people like LinLin.  Unfortunately, she hasn't figured this one out though.

So LinLin, how are things in Japan??

  • DD kicked her socks off all the time. I'd defiinitely try a few different kinds to see what works.
