February 2011 Moms

DH is no longer on board with cloth diapering. :(

I had talked to DH about CD'ing before the baby's gender was even known. I talked to him about the financialness of it (initial cost  of CD's vs. monthly/yearly cost of disposables), and laundry, and such. I covered all bases. He was hard, but I finally talked him into it and I got super exited. I bought 2 FuzziBunz on Eco Baby Buys and no more because our deal was that we would try CD'ing first, and if I was willing to commit, then we'd buy more.

We're at the stage now where I know that's the route I want to go, and have sent him some links to Ebay lots. I asked him yesterday if he'd gotten the links and instead of answering the question, he just said "I don't htink we're going to do that."

I know he's SUPER lazy with laundry, but I'm not. I always have clean clothing and so do the kids, and it'd only be an extra 2-3 loads a week most likely (unless we're having a really poopy week). He is NOT on board at all, even though the choice was supposed to have been left up to me since I'm the SAHM and I'm the one doing 90% of the diapering. I hate that he got my hopes up and now he's backing out on me! Even after I revisited the money thing- that you're wasting SO much money with disposables, CD babies have far fewer rashes than sposie diaper babies, and *I'm* the one doing laundry anyway...

I'm just really peeved off about it. In the past month, he's gotten a NEW CAR, a NEW iPHONE, and bought loads of parts for his project car. I feel like buying cloth diapers for me should be a gimme right now being that I *let* him use our tax return to get that stinking new car of his!

  • I say just go for it. Find a lot of CDs on Craigslist and just go get them. It's so worth it! We've been doing it since birth with this LO (used sposies with our other 2) and it's been so much easier than I thought it would be. Actually, when I say "we" I mean me. DH hasn't changed or washed a single diaper. He never did much of the diapering with our other 2 either. It's not something that bothers me and I'm not complaining, it's just how we work.

Since you're the one in charge of diapering and laundry, you should be the one to have the final say. I would imagine if you just went ahead and bought the CDs, your DH would probably be pissed at first, but when he sees that you don't have to buy dipes every other week, he may start to lighten up about it.

We got our entire stash on CL for under $500 and we probably have way too much. You could probably start off with a few small lots, and go with PFs since they're cheaper.

Good luck to you. I hope DH has a change of heart (again).

  • We are CDing too and I love it! I'm so happy that we aren't wasting money on sposies and the laundry (which I do 100% of too) is not that difficult to keep up with, even in my sleep-deprived state of mind. :)  Why is your DH opposed?

  • Seriously - just do it.

  • Just start buying them off of kijiji or craigslist, a few at a time. There are steals out there from mum who just want stuff out of their house. I bought 4 fuzzi buns, 14 size 1 kissaluvs and the liners for $50 off of a friend because she hadn`t bothered using them for her second (who`s almost 3 now) and she didn`t want the hassel of craigslist (obviously she would have sold them for a little more if we weren`t already friends). See if there is a local mom shop and swap page on Facebook in your area. I`ve found some great steals on my local one.

  • I'm impressed that you are trying to cloth diaper! I say go for it. We constantly have a laundry pile up at our house so DH didn't want to CD unless we had a laundry service. But if I was gung ho, I'd go ahead and do it. Men!
  • Try Spots Corner on hyenacart.com - find some good deals on used diapers and just do it!

We CD and we love it. The laundry gets intense sometimes because DD outgrew her newborn supply quickly and I haven't finished her bigger supply but the diapers are cute, we're saving money and she doesn't have all of those chemicals on her butt. Our pedi's office loves them too.

We aren't even the best about keeping up with laundry but the diapers are always washed.

  • I totally am going over to a lady's house here in about 20 min to get some CD's. :D She's selling some FuzziBunz AIO's for $4 a peice, and she's giving me 2 inserts for $0.50. That's a serious steal. And, I'm getting 12. It's a huge score and I haven't told DH yet that I'm doing it. }:D (insert evil laugh here.)

  • Oh, he can't make you! I hate sposies, but I still keep some around in case DH isn't feelin' the CDing (especially for outings). If DH does change a CD, I usually have to clean up the mess anyway. Just tell him to not throw it away and leave it someplace you can find it. In the pail if you're lucky.

It has taken me years to find the right CD system. I have tried a lot and decided I liked FuzziBunz the best, but that they were way too pricey for me. I found SunBaby diapers (from China with love) that I now like even better than FBz. I got 24 diapers for $108. Now CDing is actually enjoyable.

Best wishes with Mr. new stuff.

  • I am way late on this post but my DH also decided he is not on board either. :(  Although, I think our problem is that they are still too big (we have AI2's by grovia) and he is having leak problems, which I know are either just due to the fit or user error and I know I'm putting them on right.  I am planning on trying the CDs we have again in a month or two and seeing if he fits at that point.  Any recommendations for NB CDs that aren't very expensive?  (I feel like we spent WAY too much on the grovias as it is already!)
