Question on pink eye...

It appears that DS most likely has pink eye.  His eyes are really watery and bloodshot and yesterday and today when he woke up he had stuff (crusty like) around his eyes.  His school has warned that a few kids have had it, so I guess its our turn.  My question is when I called his pedi office they sent me through to the nurse, the nurse called me back and asked me to describe what was going on, then said yep sounds like he has pink eye, and now she is going to call in a prescription for him...does this sound normal, just to call in the prescription without seeing him?

    Yes, actually.  I think they want to rule out other symptoms like coughing, congestion, etc. -- and if he doesn't have any of those, they are likely comfortable giving you a script for eye drops.  My son came home from preschool one day with this, and when I called the pedi's office to describe, they did exactly the same thing.

    I'll say, though, that even no other symptoms were present, my son ended up having an ear infection.  I didn't discover that till about a week later.

    Hopefully your little guy just has a simple case and responds to the prescription drops quickly.

     I went to the doctor this morning with pink eye myself ( I have the same symptoms as your son does) Well, there is a new test for pink to see if it is viral or not. If it is viral the antibiotics will not help it and you have wasted your money. Mine came back as viral so I got no drops and was told it will go away on its own and to put cold compresses on my eyes 4 times daily to help with the inflammation and the scratchiness. My coming back as viral is no surprise since my DH and 2 yo son have had viral infections in the last week, mine just took a different path and I basically have a cold in my eyes.The doctor says it should heal itself in about 3/4 days.
