Pregnant after IF

Ladies who color their hair.....

I get my hair colored every 6 weeks-I have never done it at home always at a salon. I have been reassured by everyone I know that they continued to color their hair during pregnancy so I am not really scared to get it done. I guess my question is, did you tell your stylist early on that you were pg? I never asked if there was anything special they do if you are pg. Do they use special color or try not to get it directly on your scalp, etc?

I love my stylist and have been going to her for over 2 years. But I havn't told many people at all that I am pg, and if I don't have to I probably won't! WWYD?

Re: Ladies who color their hair.....

  • I switched to color glaze for now to cover the gray : ( But I'm a natural brunette with highlights. I'm afraid to even go to the nail salon right now and I know that sounds crazy but the odor / smell...makes me sick even thinking about it - I may have a hair coloring / nail salon aversion. Can't phathom smelling the smells.

My OBGYN did not comment directly about the hair salon but he did tell me I could bleach my teeth, which is odd because I didn't even ask! : )

  • I'm a hair stylist. IMO it's always a good to tell your stylist that you're pregnant. Horomones can change the way your hair takes color. If you don't want to tell her then I would say to her that you think you might be pregnant. Ammonia free color is always best but most stylist don't use it. If you're blonde, ask for a heavy weave, that way it's not directly on your scalp. Hope that helps :)

  • My stylist knew I was going through IF treatments.  I think you'll be fine if you have a good relationship with her.  Just tell her its on the down low.  Have a fun day at the salon :)

  • I already had an appointment to get my hair done next Saturday before I got my BFP, I'll be 7w1d and plan on telling my stylist that I'm PG but quickly also saying that its not public knowledge but that I thought she should know. I've been reassured as well that highlights are ok as long as you're in a well ventilated area.

  • My OB doesn't ok hair coloring or highlighting until after you pass the 13 week mark, but every doctor/practice is different. It might not be a bad idea to check with your doctor if you have any reservations. My hairstylist knew about our IF treatments, so I let her know I was pregnant when I went in for highlights at 17 weeks (I put it off longer than my OB recommended b/c that's what I was comfortable with).

  • I've had my hair highlited twice this pregnancy.  The first was shortly after I found out I was pregnant.  I didn't want to tell my stylist at that time so I just asked her to make sure she didn't touch my scalp.  She kind of smiled and said "sure."  When I went back at 14 weeks I told her the news and she said "i kind of figured that out before".

    Good luck.

  • Mine new about our IF so I told her when I went last ( i think at 8 wks). I didnt have any highlights then bc my RE suggested waiting until after the first tri. I would probably tell her when you go, just in case your hair reacts differently to the color.

    Have fun!!

    P.S. I love your ticker!

  • I already spoke To my hair lady about pregnancy. She said it's fine because she doesnt use bleach, the products are all narural (whatevrr that means) and since I do highlights the color doesn't sit on my scalp! I'm getting my hair done probably 3 times during my pregnancy.

  • Thanks for asking this, because I had the exact same question this morning as I was looking at my grays in the mirror!  I think I'm going to hold off for a few more weeks because I couldnt stand the smell before pregnancy -- who knows what it would do to me now!
