If your labor started in your back..

how did you know? On my list of things to "call L&D for", it says low, dull back pain that may come and go or may be constant. I've had it for about 4 hours so far. I DID do more than I normally do today, though. How do I know the difference between aches and pains and what to be concerned about?

I layed down about 30 minutes ago and I'm having a BIT of menstrual cramps... but nothing timeable.

Re: If your labor started in your back..

  • I had some back pain that would come and go in waves earlier this week so I contacted my Dr, the nurse said to drink water and put my feet up. I had drank more water that day than I ever do so I know I wasn't dehydrated but it doesn't hurt to call your hotline and talk to someone. I will not be suprised if I only have back labor or at least if it starts there when it comes on full blast. Your painm could be associated with doing more today for sure. If a warm bath doesn't help, it could be labor (or that's what I have been told anyways)....good luck!

  • OMG!  You will know if you're having back labor.  It is intensely painful.  I am dealing with this right as I type this (in between contractions).  It's more painful to me than the actual contraction in the front.

I had back labor and the big distinction between that and the back ache I had been feeling up to that point was that the contractions eventually got more intense and would reach around to the front of my hips and lower pelvic area. HTH!
