Diaper Baby- For those with dogs

At my baby shower a couple of weeks ago, someone made me a 'Diaper Baby."  (Similar to a Diaper Cake, only a baby...)

Since I have never so much as HELD a newborn before, I figured I would get some practice in today, and discovered a much better use for it.  I got my dogs used to the baby being carried around!  I went from room to room holding it, and placing it in different spots in our house.  At first they were very excited, ( I had to tell our lab "no, don't nibble the baby")  but then calmed down and sat calmly whenever I put the baby down.  I'm hoping this good behavior keeps up when the real thing is here!

  • We took a class with our dog and practiced with a baby doll. They recommend starting with carrying it around, then moving to sitting on the floor. Never let them get close enough to lick or touch the baby until they are calm and controlled. Whatever behavior you deem acceptable for your actual baby, enforce with the doll. For example, we are okay with licking his feet, but not his hands or face. So he is never, ever allowed to lick the doll's face. Sniffing is okay. Also, play baby crying noises and go pretend to tend to the baby. Then turn the noises off. Your dog will soon understand that you going to baby means that the baby will quiet down.

  • I don't have a doll, but I've been using my Moby wrap with a stuffed blue teddy bear.  Calleigh got excited at first because a) I was wearing something and b) it was a stuffed animal (her favorite kind of toy)... but I didn't give her any attention and she lost interest fairly quickly.  I wonder if that will have the same effect as a baby doll... It would be a miracle if I could put the animal on the floor and NOT have her chew it to bits!
