March 2011 Moms

Ever heard of this...thought this was funny...

At my doctors appt today I was in the waiting room with another preggo lady. She was on her third (this is my first). She told me with her first pregnancy she went to 48 weeks. I didn't say anything, to be polite, but wow, doesn't that sound somewhat LONG!? She was about 23-25 years old, I'd guess. Is that insane or what? Every heard of anyone going that long??

  • My mother tells the story of her neighbor back in the early 1980s who was due with her little boy like around January 20th, but he wasn't born until March 15th. (The story has to do with this birthstone jewelry the mom bought and had to keep returning/exchanging.) I called B.S., but she swore it was true.

  • I wonder if those stories aren't about ladies with long cycles.  When I was on the TTC board some women ovulated a lot later than the typical 2 weeks after their cycles started, maybe these women are similar?

  • One of my cheerleaders mom's told me that her doctor let her go to 44 weeks. She was being monitored and the doc (I think it was actually a midwife) thought it was okay.

I think there was something wrong with the "dating" of the pregnancy myself...

  • Well when you think about it. The average pregnancy for first timers is 42 w 3 d so if alot of women have their babies at 37 weeks then some women must go to about 44 or more to balance it right? A women at church told me she went over with all of hers. Her first was at 44 weeks. I do think it has something to do with longer cycles, but also that some women just bake their babies longer.

I believe it's actually 41w 3d but I get what you are saying... someone has to go over quite a bit to average that if others go at 37!!

I'm highly skeptical about 48 weeks though!!!  She sounds like maybe she was uneducated on how the placenta functions... and probably had the dates off!!

  • my guess is either 1. she doesn't remember properly, or 2. she didn't really have any idea when her LMP was, or had an irregular menstrual cycle.
Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)
  • My Bradley Birth Instructor swears she has a friend that goes almost a year with all her births.  That seems a little crazy to me.
