let me preface by saying the damn thing has sucked forever. And it's electric which DH and I both hate.
Originally, it would run WAY hotter than whatever you set it at. If you needed something to be cooked at 400, you'd need to set around 290-300.
The other night we were cooking a frozen pizza. I was the one who put it in the oven. Then I was sitting here at the kitchen table goofing off online... when I hear a pop and fizzle/sizzle sound and seemed like the lights flickered faintly. I was like "what in the hell was that". DH said, "Hmmmmm I think the light inside must have blown out". Which I found odd because I didn't remember ever seeing a light on inside the oven, but figured whatever.
Last night I wanted to cook my steak/spinach pinwheel things. Set the oven to preheat. Seemed odd that it was taking forever to pre-heat. I checked the thermometer inside after 30mins and it was only at 250 (needed to be 400), So we cranked the temp setting all the way up to over 500. Finally got the meat cooked (took over an hour, for something that said to cook for 25 mins, thank god for our meat thermometer, at least we had a clue when it was finally cooked through). according to the thermometer, the inside was only 325.
I already had brownie mix mixed up and ready to go in before I'd even turned on the oven, so I decided to go ahead and put them in after the meat was out. After like 10 mins I smell burning. Check the brownies and see the top is almost black/burnt and the underneath is still goo/uncooked. That's when we figured out the top heating element was the only one working and it must have been the bottom element that had blown out the other day.
I covered the brownies with foil and put them back in lower to avoid burning the crap out of the top. They finally cooked too.
So now either an oven repair, or a new oven is in our future. DH has always talked about how he wanted to switch that out for gas - which may be a huge project since there isn't any gas in the kitchen.
Damn, I was going to make cookies this weekend.
Re: so, our oven took a big crap (Long)
What a mess.
We need a new one too. Ours sounds like it's going to explode every time we turn it on. We're waiting for some magic moment to pull the trigger.
Love the sig pic, BTW

I think it'll be cheaper to get a new one rather than try to fix it although switching to gas may be a project.
And our dryer just died. Again. I think it may just be the belt, but things keep breaking on it. May be time to just suck it up and get a new one to go with the washer we had to buy recently.
Good times.

yeah, maybe we can just keep it electric since we are on the house-hunt, and just plan on keeping the townhouse as a rental. So there really isn't much need to upgrade to gas in the long run. I'll have to discuss with DH to see where he stands on this currently.

Haha never thought about the smell.
If you are planning on keeping it as a rental. I would just stay with electric. That way you wouldn't have to worry about getting the gas hooked up.
