..on the spelling Aoife vs Efa? Both names have connections to the name Eva, and I think they would have the same pronunciation, but I am not positive (I know Aoife is PRN. EE-fa according to behindthename.com). Which spelling would you use? They are both on Behindthename.com, so I take it they both have legitimacy. I love the name, and I was curious about your opinions.

Efa. Even though the other is pretty, I think it would be difficult to go through school with the other spelling....a lot of people will mispronounce it.

thats how I feel. I know it is traditional, but I feel like a lot of people out in the world would not have a clue how to say it right (I always want to say EH-oy-fee).

Exactly. The other spelling is just not pretty, at all, to me it ruins the name. The pronunciation will no doubt get annoying though, I can never remember how this one is said, so really it is your call.

Aoife. You'll have to correct spelling and pronunciation, but you shouldn't dumb down a traditional name to appeal to the uneducated masses. Those who aren't familiar wit Aoife before they meet your little one will be after meeting her and if it's spelled correctly, they'll have learned something, too.

Aoife. Unfortunately, people will always pronounce names. Even easy ones.. My name is Jocelyn and more people mispronounce it than pronounce it correctly. Shocking I know. I get jozalyn, jocklyn, and joshlin all the time...so annoying.

Oh, and I had another thought. I've seen some examples of people butchering names I didn't think could be butchered (Jocelyn seems really obvious, but I've seen worse posted), so there's no guarentee that Efa will be pronounced the way you want.

That's probably what they said about Sean years ago. Now everyone knows how to pronounce it. Since it's becoming more and more popular has been in top 5(?) in Ireland for a few years and more and more popular in the US, I'd use the Gaelic spelling.

Efa or Ifa seems like a totally different name to me - like Shavonne / Siobhan or Shawn / Sean.

I agree. Something about Efa looks off, like you grabbed random letters and tossed them in a hat. (And that's beside the fact that I prefer the more traditional spelling)

Well, to be honest I was shocked when I saw "Efa" on behind the name because I agree that is does look off... I love the way Aoife looks except that is doesn't look at all like its pronounced.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback; haha, I kind of expected it to go this way.
