2nd Trimester

Planned delivery date...

So I'm technically due July 27th. However, my OBGYN says it will probably be more like August because first time moms tend to be late.  I'm hoping for this. I really would like the baby to be born on August 2nd, my husbands birthday, as well as his dad's and his grandmas (his dad's mom). So adding a 4th generation to that August 2nd trend would be cool. Though I would really like if it happened naturally...are doctors usually flexible with a day they would induce you?

Thanks!

Oh, and my husband, his dad, and his grandma are all exactly 23 years apart from each other! Pretty weird. We missed that boat. But I like how it's special to them.

Re: Planned delivery date...

  • It depends on the doctor I think but as long as you are past your due date (or for some docs, 39 weeks) I think they are often flexible about inducing.

  • LOL im due on the 24th and keep saying I'll hold off until Aug 10. Probably unlikely but that's my loose goal right now. Way to many July b-days on both sides, I'm not a big fan of the group b-days

  • depends on your OB, some are perfectly fine with and wont induce before 42 weeks as long as baby is doing ok. Some dont like going beyond 41 weeks. Looks like youd be 42 weeks on 8/9, most doctors arent going to induce so mom can pick the birthday.

  • I'm sorry, but I cannot imagine wanting to be induced for any reason. I guess I prefer to let things happen naturally.
  • My doctor won't induce before you're 10 days overdue unless there is a medical reason.

  • while I can't imagine asking for an induction just because of a date, it'll really depend on your OB.

Mine will absolutely not talk induction until 41 weeks, unless there are other issues. He prefers to wait until 42.

Regardless, if your body and baby are not ready for labor, an induction will most likely take more than a day anyways.

  • My birthday is July 22nd. I want to keep this baby in me as long as possible because I want as much of a separate birthday as I can get! But thats just me. If you want to try to have it on August 2nd (my due date) I would say give it a shot with natural methods of inducing labor and start on the 1st. I would never dream of using medical interventions to force my baby out before it is ready to come on its own, especially for no real reason like a prefered birthday.
  • Your doctor may be flexible with this since you'll be past your due date.  However, you need to take more into consideration than just picking your child's birth date.  I get that it is a family thing and it would be super cool, but there are risks that come with induction.  If you're not dilated or effaced at all, there's a really great chance that your induction won't even work and you'll end up with a c-section.  In fact, just by being induced your risk of having a c-section goes up.  Also, you need to look into what methods your doctors use for induction.  Cytotec (a.k.a. misoprostol)  is sometimes still used to ripen your cervix and can be very dangerous, so I'd want to make sure that my doc doesn't use that during an induction.  Induction also doesn't guarantee the birthdate.  Depending on the time of day your induction is scheduled for and the protocols your doctor uses, you could end up having the baby on the 3rd and then you induced for no reason at all!  The timeline most doctors use is they want the baby delivered within 24 hours after your bag of waters breaks or is ruptured manually.  So feasibly, if the induction fails, but your bag of waters is still in tact, you could make the choice to go home rather than choose to try and augment by breaking your waters (and putting yourself on the clock) or choosing a c-section.  You also need to consider the health of your baby over your desire for him/her to have a specific birthdate.  If there's nothing wrong either you or the child, then why would you not want to let him/her bake for as long as possible?  There are just so many facets to being electively induced that you need to research before making this sort of decision if you have no other medical need for an induction by the time Aug. 2 rolls around.

  • It's a neat idea. But, FWIW, I delivered my DD at 37w4d. First time mom's don't always go late. I was due August 8th, and had her July 22. I never dreamed my August baby would come in July. But, they do what they want.

    So be prepared for anything.
