Sling/carrier?

Is there any kind of sling or carrier that would be good for a newborn (like less than 1 month old)? My friend is giving me her barely used Baby Bjorn carrier but I thought I read that was for 1 month and up. We will be travelling for my sister's wedding exactly 4 weeks after my due date and LO will be with us for everything and I know we could just keep him in the car seat the whole time, but I thought maybe we should have a sling on hand in case that would work better.

Re: Sling/carrier?

  • I had a Moby Wrap that I used for DS and I plan on using it when its time for baby #2. It's all fabric-no straps or buckles. Took a few tries to get used to putting it on securely but it was really soft and comfy.

  • In those first few weeks, your baby will be much, much happier (i.e. not crying) when he is being held.  You should plan to literally hold or carry your baby at least 75 % of the time, so whether you are going to the wedding or not, a sling or carrier will be very helpful.

  • I have the Sleepy Wrap (identical to the Moby) and LOVED it, realy liked using and I even used it again this week with my 24 pounder.  It was great when he was teeny tiny too, I could keep him nice and snuggled up against me and he would immediately fall asleep.  Once you get the tying method down it's pretty easy, but it is a bit of a process to get on.

  • I have a piggy sack.

You're more than welcome to borrow one of mine for the trip and if you were to want one you can just order after.

I meant to say this too, Sarah. Its just sitting in my closet right now, you are more than welcome to borrow it and see if your baby likes it before buying one.

  • Another vote for the Moby! We use it for at least an hour a day still.

  • I have a mei tai (which is what a piggy sack is) and an ergo w/ the infant insert.  The infant insert costs the same as a moby wrap.  The ergo isn't cheap, but we use it constantly, and DD can still ride in it, it has a much higher weight limit, can be on back or front, etc.

I have a bjorn that I need to sell, it was killer on my back/shoulders.  They are really only good for a very short period of time, because once the kid is over like 15 lbs they are just too heavy to have in the bjorn.

Maybe this is why my friend barely used hers!

Thank you to pps for the offers to borrow a wrap! I may take someone up on that.

  • I have mine (the active version w/ a little extra lateral support, but not enough) in a bag to sell, I will check the weight/height info for you- but the one you are being loaned should have the minimum weight info in it.  I will say our bjorn was helpful when DD was little and I used it with the now 18 month old boy I watch when he was little as well.  There are times when they just want to be held and wearing them is the only way to get anything done.

  • Ditto the PPs - you'll love the moby when your LO is tiny and it would be perfect for the wedding, IMO.

I also have a rebozo, which took me some time to get the hang of, but I love it now.

I have an Beco Butterfly and it is an awesome carrier.

We were able to use a Bjorn (before we had the Beco) from like months 3-7 or so?  Like Daisy said, it would hurt my back if I used it for more than a hour.

    GL!

Thank you for mentioning this. For some reason I didn't really think about how much we'd be carrying him around/holding him. <-- this makes me sound dumb, but I'm having a clueless day

It took me about 2 weeks to figure that out.  It seems so obvious, but no one ever says it explicitly - they always seems so worried about the baby sleeping, etc. and I always though "sleep = laying down" so I kept trying to lay DD down to sleep.  Once I realized she would just sleep on me/in my arms and I couldn't put her down, everything got easier.

  • When Ada was tiny I used a ring sling. Mine is a Maya Wrap. I then moved into wovens wraps. We have an Ergo that we use all the time now, but never used the infant insert.

Sleeping Baby productions has really inexpensive ring slings, some that are made of linen, which would be cool for the summer.

  • I used the Moby a lot... DH preferred our other carrier, which was Chicco's version of the Bjorn.  Its weight limit began at 7 lbs, and since we took him home just under 8 lbs, he was fine to fit in it from the very beginning and always settled right down when DH would wear him in that.  He liked the Moby a great deal, too.  We later got an Ergo and I FAR prefer that to the Moby simply b/c I don't like dealing w/all of the wrapping/tying of the Moby.  I will use the Moby w/any other LOs, but I also plan to buy an infant insert for the Ergo so it can be used early on, too.
  • A ring sling or moby at your LO's age and a Ergo/Becco when your LO is older.  Baby Bjorn's actually aren't good for babies as they put too much pressure on the bottom of their spine.  Some people also say that it can be over stimulating for LO's to face outward and BB's aren't very comfy for their parents either ;)

  • We went with an Ergo and got the newborn insert...they are pricey but it will last a long time and can be used right away.  We also got a lighter Infantino brand one...I bought it because it was super cheap at Target and looked like it may be good for hiking and such.

  • I have a Moby. It has been really useful for DD. However, shewas and is pretty small. I started using it when she was 4 lbs. I still had to hold her head & I was VERY  careful to make sure she was still breathing ( a concern wuth small babies). At  7 wks (6 lbs), she still loves it. However it is a PITA to get off & on esp. when trying to bf. I can see it becoming more of a pain on my back as she gets older. I was thinking of switching to a sling or an ergo, but she is still pretty small...

  • Based off of the reviews, we decided to splurge on an Ergo with the infant insert. I bought it for $70 (after shipping) on babysteals.com one day. I also bought a cheap sling because it was on sale but I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't work since I only spent maybe $7 on it.

  • FWIW, greenberries in columbia and soft & cozy baby both have workshops (free) where you can try different carriers. However, you my find them useful after you have the baby.
