I can't remember who recommended the retract-a-gate but I just wanted to say thank you. I've had mine installed at the bottom of the stairs for 2 weeks now and I love it's ease of use and especially how there's no gate that sticks out when it's open. I just ordered my second one for the top of the stairs. I bought the first one as a test to see if I felt it was safe enough for the top of the stairs but after using it, I definitely think it is. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you.
Re: F/U: Thanks for the Retract-a-Gate recommendation
I'm so jealous!! This is one of the things on the top of our list for big(ish) purchases after DH and I are both employed again. I'm am so over the clunky gate at the top of our stairs...it has destroyed the wall that it smack against every time we go past it when it's open. So annoying!!!
Yeah, I think my blood pressure went up a bit today when I saw the total price for the gate, the extra hardware, and the shipping. But, I think it's the only option that's really going to work on this particular stairway.
As far as your gate hitting the wall, one thing that I did with my other gates in the house is I screwed in these little bumpers into the baseboard where the gate swings so that the gate would hit the bumper instead of the wall. I'm not sure if that will work with your configuration but if it will, it's an easy $2 fix and will only create one small hole in the baseboard.

Unfortunately, I don't think those will work. Our upstairs hallway is really narrow and runs perpendicular to the stairs (so at the top of the stairs you have to go right or left). So when the gate swings open it just barely skims the hallway wall. And when the gate gets a little loose (which happens about once a week now that Warner is always trying to hang off of it), it scratches the wall. And DH and I don't usually notice it's loose until after it scratches the wall :-(
I guess I could get some kind of bumper, but it would basically be in the center of the wall...but I guess that would look better than scratches!!
I dont know if I am who you are referring to because I definitely said how much I like them but not sure if I said it first...regardless I am glad you are happy with them!!!
we LOVE them!!!!
Oh, I see. That sucks. Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things turnaround soon for you two.
Yes, there were a few people who chimed in and said they liked them so that's what prompted me to give it a try.
