Trying something new today, those who wax come in!

So, I tried waxing my legs myself once about 12 years ago in high school, using some of that honey/suger wax stuff...only to leave half my hair and lots of wax on my leg after removing the strip and wanting to cry. lol

I've made an appointment to have a professional do this today. What should I expect? I'm a little bit scared.

  • I've never had my legs waxed, but I do get my bikini area waxed and it's really not all that bad.  It doesn't hurt anymore than getting my eyebrows done, except it just takes longer.

At the risk of sounding like a complete moron can you walk me through getting a bikini wax for the first time?  Do you shave beforehand?  Let it grow out entirely?  Trim?  Do you recommend a full Brazilian or starting with a smaller area and working your way up?

Sorry for all the ?'s my skin just gets really irritated from shaving and plus I'm lazy so it often gets neglected.

bumping from my phone. please pardon any typos and missing punctuation
  • That area scares the living day lights out of me!  I remember the days of period pads getting stuck to hair down there, that was painful...

I've been waxing for years and it's really not uncomfortable at all anymore.  I would suggest for the first time, take an XS Tylenol before you go just to take the edge off.   You'll have to grow it out a little (maybe 1/4 of an inch?) DON'T shave before or trim anything.  After you go for while you wont need to grow out as much sine the hair will be finer and we come out easier from the root.  Good Luck!!!

Not uncomfortable anymore, how was it the first time? Do you remember?

  • You might get a good laugh out of this. It's an email that someone sent me years ago I just found again today going through the files on my computer so I posted it on my blog. HAHA, It still brings tears of laughter to my eyes.

  • I usually get brazillian waxes, and honestly, they don't hurt anywhere near as bad as I feared they would.  The more you go, the less they hurt, too.

For the first time, I would start with a regular bikini wax and see whether that bothers you.  That's what I did, and the bikini wax was nothing for me.  It potentially hurt less than getting my eyebrows threaded, I'm not even kidding, and I've been getting brazillians ever since.  A brazillian obviously hurts a bit more, but depending on your tolerance for pain, it may not be too bad.  Also, the spots where it hurts the worst are not where I would've expected, either.  The most painful strip of wax for me is right at the top - down below actually hurts less for me.  I can't speak for everyone, though, that's just me.

I haven't been since I've been pregnant, but I've been meaning to make an appointment.  Before I go, if it's been a while, I usually just trim with clippers if there is more than about 1/4 inch of growth, like PP said.  I also agree with PP to take a XS Tylenol before you go.

  • Waxing's not that bad--I get a brazilian every month, but have never had my legs done.  It's warm/hot and then gets ripped off. Not much to it.  Good luck!

  • LadyBug that was hilarious!!!!!!  And sorry for hijacking your post Embarrassed

Thanks for the tips ladies!  I'm not really all that worried about the pain, I was just more worried about the logistics beforehand.

  • I also get brazillians done about once a month. The first one, depending on the thickness of  your hair, can be painful. My hair is pretty thick. It hurt but was tolerable. i was able to lay still with the occasional "ooohhhh..." Now it's nothing. Hardly hurts at all and my hair is alot thinner.  I dunno if it's the same for the legs!! GL!!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's so worth the read.

I don't mind that you 'hijacked' the post, I've often considered getting the nether regions done too....maybe I'll get brave while I'm at my appt. today.

  • My coworkers and I were just talking about this today.  I told my coworkers I'd be waxing once I couldn't bend over to shave anymore.  They all looked aghast and said I couldn't do that while pregnant.  None have kids though, so I'm taking their "advice" with a grain of salt.

  • I just did this for the first time a few weeks ago (half-a-leg) and man, I can't believe I waited 35 yrs to wax my legs. If you have someone who does it quick and in larger sections, it should be over fast and the sting is pretty much over, before it begins.

For some reason, my left leg hurt more and she said that was common. I am doing it again in April and may just keep doing it. It is awesome!!

For a few hours after, my legs were red and looked like hives, but that didn't last long!

    Good Luck!!

  • It's not that bad. I had my first brazilian a couple of months ago, and now I'm going back to do legs too. It is sooo nice not to have to shave, and a few minutes of discomfort is nothing compared to that. I would look at local reviews of places on citysearch and yelp for the best people because it really helps when they are fast but thorough.

  • I just want to add that my first Brazilian was horrible pain. Afterwards (about a few hours) I felt fine, but I literally wanted to cry while they were doing it. I have sensitive skin while shaving and I've had two Brazilian waxes so far. By far more painful than just a regular eyebrow wax... at least for myself and the others I know that have had them. Underarms were somewhat painful, but it was over so much quicker, but I still bleed when I get waxed :/

  • I get it done only once in awhile and it hurts! Be ready for it to hurt. Mine also bleeds in some spots where the root is thicker.

I also wax my armpits- that hurts more, but I haven't had a brazilian.
