2nd Trimester

? from 1st Trimester

My last two pregnancies my OB has asked if I want to do the test to find out about downs, etc. I have always declined. I am just curious though.. what does this test consist of , ultrasound, amnio??

If it is just an ultrasound I might get it this time but I am scared to death of an amnio as I went into labor right after an amnio(lung maturity) with my DD#1.

Any advice or can anyone explain what this test is and what it tests for?

Thanks!

Re: ? from 1st Trimester

  • I declined as well. However, I'm pretty sure they told me they would draw fluid from the sack and do blood work. I can't remember exactly, but I think this is what they said. I could be wrong.

  • It depends, if you are talking about the 1st trimester screen...then they do an ultrasound and they take blood.  At the ultrasound they measure the baby and then they look at something near the neck to make sure its growing correctly, and the bloodwork gives them a more solid answer.  Results are around 80% accurate I think.  You get this sometime between 12-14 weeks I think.

You could also be talking about the CVS test, but I don't know anything about that and I didn't get it.  I hope this helps a little.

  • There are different tests, so you need to ask your Dr. what he is asking about.

NT Scan - includes bloodwork and an u/s. Tests for downs and some other problems. I choose to have this done. The results give you the odds that your baby will have problems (it does not give you a yes or no).

If the NT scan shows that you are at risk or you know you are at high risk, then your doctor can perform the CVS or amnio. These both go in with needles and take something. These also have a small risk of miscarriage. If my NT scan showed high odds, I would have skipped the CVS and gone for the amnio.

  • I had both the NTscan/blood work and the Amnio.  The with the NT scan they checked for the measurements as the pp mentioned and I had my finger pricked and the blood was sent off for the lab results, this is a two part test which was around 13 weeks and we did the amnio at 16 weeks.  Although the NT scan results came back with really good  results, I wanted a better percentage so I did the Amnio which was a little painful.  They used the u/s to guide them to make sure the needle went in the correct place and I rested at home for the rest of the day.
  • I was offered an NT scan around 13wks and QUAD screening at 16wks (blood work)

  • I was offered an NT scan at 12 weeks, which we did do.  It was just an u/s and blood work.  Everything came back good.  If it had looked funny, they would have given the option for amnio or CVS, which are more invasive.

  • With DS and with this pregnancy we did the NT scan.  Like others have said it's just an ultrasound with some blood work.  My doc doesn't suggest anything additional unless you're higher risk for downs (age, family history..) or have NT scan results that could indicate any issues.

I agree.  They were going to do the same procedure, but I declined.

God decided to bless me with this baby, and if I did find out it had downs, I would'nt abort anyway, so why bother with the test.  When I go for my 20 week anatomy u/s, if they find something then they find something.  After having so many losses, I just wanted to enjoy my pregnancy and not worry.

You could'nt pay me to ever have an amnio...
